Skittish Curiosity.
The lurklet has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to hide, especially in forested or overgrown terrain.
Forest-Bound Instinct.
While in a forest or natural environment, the lurklet always knows the direction of the nearest source of clean, running water and instinctively avoids stagnant or tainted water.
Gentle Mimicry.
The lurklet can imitate simple sounds it has heard, such as laughter, whispers, animal calls, or a single spoken word. A creature that hears the sounds can determine they are imitations with a successful DC 12 Wisdom (Insight) check.
Aversion to Swamp Water.
The lurklet is instinctively repelled by swamp water. If forced into contact with stagnant, corrupted, or necromantically tainted water, the lurklet immediately becomes frightened and attempts to flee at all costs.
(See DM notes regarding transformation.)
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +5, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 1 piercing damage.
(The lurklet uses this attack only if cornered or handled roughly.)
Startled Flee.
When a creature moves within 5 feet of the lurklet, the lurklet may use its reaction to move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Description
Lurklets are small, fuzzy bipeds rarely taller than a foot, with oversized eyes and soft, expressive ears. They are naturally curious, drawn to warmth, light, and quiet camps, but lack true malice or ambition. Forest folk believe lurklets act as subtle indicators of environmental imbalance, gathering near places where corruption has begun—but not yet taken hold.
They are not aggressive, not territorial, and not brave.
Ecology & Behavior
Lurklets are small, fuzzy bipeds rarely more than a foot tall, with oversized eyes and soft, expressive ears. They are naturally curious and often linger near campsites, following travelers at a cautious distance or leaving behind small arrangements of stones, bones, or berries. They are neither territorial nor aggressive, and will flee rather than fight if threatened.
Druids and centaurs believe lurklets gather near places where the land has begun to sour, acting as subtle indicators of corruption yet to fully surface.
⚠️ DM NOTE (Not Player-Facing)
If a lurklet comes into contact with swamp water, it undergoes a rapid, irreversible transformation into a Bog-Born (see separate stat block). This is a biological reaction, not a curse, and cannot be dispelled.
