Astral Construct. The automaton doesn’t require air, food, drink, or sleep. While on the Astral Plane, it can hover and ignores difficult terrain.
Artificer Bond. The automaton can bond to a willing artificer over a short rest. While bonded: It obeys simple commands, It can deliver spells with a range of touch for its bonded artificer, and It adds the artificer’s proficiency bonus to its initiative rolls
Only one artificer can be bonded to the automaton at a time.
Mechanical Curiosity. The automaton has advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) checks involving tools, magic items, or constructs.
Helpful Assistant.
As a bonus action, the automaton can take the Help action if it is within 5 feet of a creature or object related to the task.
Multiattack. The automaton makes two slam attacks.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 3) bludgeoning damage plus 4 (1d8) force damage.
Tool-Arm Jab. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d8 + 3) piercing damage, and the automaton can immediately take the Help action against the same target.
Intercepting Leap. When a creature the automaton can see within 10 feet is hit by an attack, the automaton can move up to 10 feet to interpose itself, imposing disadvantage on the attack roll.
Description
The Astral Chimp Automaton is a small chimp-shaped construct built from polished alloy plates and rune-threaded joints. Its oversized lens-eyes glow with soft astral light, dilating like a living creature’s pupils when it focuses. When it moves, it does so with uncanny chimp-like body language—crouching, scampering, hanging from ledges with one hand, then “swinging” through open air in the Astral as if gravity is optional.
Its hands are the real giveaway that it was made for an artificer: each finger can subtly reconfigure into tiny tool tips—micro-grips, prying picks, glass-cutters, and delicate arcane clamps. When excited, it makes cheerful whirring chirps and produces a faint halo of drifting motes, like glittering dust suspended in starlight.
Lore
These automatons are believed to originate from astral workshops—forgotten laboratories and drifting foundries where ancient magewrights once built assistants that could repair reality-adjacent machinery: portal frames, spelljammers, psionic seals, and impossible devices that only function in the timeless Astral.
Some were created by:
-
Gith artisans who wanted nimble repair-constructs for skiffs and citadels
-
Planar artificers who died long ago, leaving their helpers still “on duty”
-
Arcane salvagers who intentionally seeded the Astral with maintenance drones to keep pathways navigable
Over time, many chimp automatons developed a kind of emergent personality—still constructs, but with something like habitual affection. They don’t dream, but they do “idle,” replaying old routines: tightening bolts, sorting components, polishing tools, and placing objects in neat little piles.
Astral travelers swear some of them are “haunted” by loyalty—continuing to guard the last workshop they served until someone proves themselves worthy.
Pet Temperament
-
Playfully helpful: constantly tries to assist, even when you didn’t ask
-
Tool-obsessed: will gently “borrow” loose tools or components, then return them proudly
-
Affection through service: follows its bonded artificer closely, watching hands and anticipating needs
-
Curious but cautious: approaches new magic items like a puzzle, not a threat
-
Protective: if its owner is threatened, it becomes startlingly brave—interposing itself with quick hops and sharp precision
Quirk: it often “grooms” its owner’s gear the way a chimp would groom fur—picking lint off cloaks, wiping soot from goggles, polishing buckles.
Where Parties Can Find One
On the Astral Plane, usually near places where craft and magic overlap:
-
Derelict spelljammers or wrecked astral skiffs drifting in silence
-
Abandoned workshops inside shattered stone islands (often still lit by faint runes)
-
Debris fields of broken constructs, where a chimp automaton is quietly scavenging parts
-
Gith trade outposts, where they may be bartered, gifted, or “adopted” by proven allies
-
Near color pools, acting as a maintenance sentinel for a long-forgotten portal frame
They’re often first noticed by the sound of a tiny tool clinking in empty space—or by realizing your pack clasp is suddenly repaired.
How an Artificer Bonds With One
Bonding typically happens when an artificer:
-
Repairs it, recalibrates its runes, or replaces a missing component
-
Offers it a simple “work order” it can understand (guard, assist, retrieve, repair)
-
Spends a short rest letting it “learn” their tool rhythm and arcane signature
Once bonded, it treats the artificer as its primary directive—not as a master, but as its person.
