Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day or 4/Day in Lair). If Aurelion fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Celestial Archivist. Aurelion cannot be surprised. Magical darkness does not obscure its vision. Illusions within 120 feet automatically fail unless cast by a deity or artifact-level source.

Living Codex. Aurelion has perfect recall of any knowledge it has ever encountered. It has advantage on all Intelligence and Wisdom checks and saving throws.

Sanctum Guardian. While within the Katsudarma Library or its sacred grounds, Aurelion regains 30 hit points at the start of each turn and gains advantage on all saving throws.

Judgment of Silence. Hostile creatures that start their turn within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 21 Wisdom saving throw or be silenced (as the silence spell) until the start of their next turn.

Wings of Stillness. While hovering, Aurelion creates a zone of perfect calm in a 40-foot radius. Ranged attacks made through this area have disadvantage as air pressure and light subtly distort.

Actions

Multiattack. Aurelion makes three attacks: one beak and two talon attacks.

Radiant Beak. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 36 (4d12+9) piercing damage plus 18 (4d8) Radiant damage.

Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +15 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 28 (4d8+9) slashing damage.

Scripture Breath (Recharge 5–6). Aurelion exhales a cone of radiant glyph-light in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 22 Wisdom saving throw. On a failed save, the creature takes 72 (16d8) Radiant damage, stunned until the end of their next turn. On a success: half damage and not stunned.

Edict of Memory. One creature Aurelion can see within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 22 Charisma saving throw or become overwhelmed by celestial knowledge, becoming incapacitated until the end of its next turn and taking 27 (6d8) Psychic damage.

Bonus Actions

Change Shape. Aurelion magically transforms into any creature that is Medium or Small, while retaining its game statistics (other than its size). This transformation ends if the dragon is reduced to 0 hit points or uses a bonus action to end it.

Reactions

Foreseen Outcome. When Aurelion or a creature it can see is hit by an attack, Aurelion can impose disadvantage on the attack roll and grant advantage on the target’s next saving throw.

Legendary Actions

Aurelion can take 3 (4 in Lair) legendary actions, choosing from the options below.

Silent Wing. Aurelion moves up to half its fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Archivist’s Strike. Aurelion makes one talon attack.

Glyph Surge (Costs 2 Actions). Radiant runes erupt in a 20-foot radius. Hostile creatures must succeed on a DC 21 Constitution saving throw or take 22 (4d10) Radiant damage and be blinded until the end of their next turn.

Description

Warden of the Katsudarma Library, Keeper of the First Codices, Voice of Celestial Memory

Aurelion resembles a colossal owl-dragon, with vast feathered wings of pearl-white and gold, a draconic body layered in radiant scales, and a massive owl-like head crowned with celestial horn-crests. Its eyes glow with soft starlight, holding neither anger nor mercy — only awareness.

Its feathers are etched with glowing script in Celestial runes.
Its wings sound like turning pages when they move.
Its shadow resembles a cathedral window.

Lore

The Katsudarma Library is the greatest repository of divine and mortal knowledge in Mount Celestia — containing truths too dangerous, sacred, or powerful for any single god to control.

Aurelion was not born.

It was written into existence by a concord of celestials, archons, and divine scribes as a living safeguard — a dragon whose purpose is memory, judgment, and protection of truth.

It does not hoard gold.
It hoards understanding.

It does not kill intruders.
It measures them.

Only those who seek knowledge without corruption are allowed passage.

Temperament

  • Calm, patient, and unfathomably wise

  • Never hostile without cause

  • Will speak gently before acting

  • Values intent over action

  • Respects humility above power

It is possible to converse with Aurelion for hours and never realize you are in danger — until you lie.

Where It Is Found

Always within the Katsudarma Library, either:

  • Perched atop celestial archives

  • Hovering silently between spires of books

  • Resting in a dome of floating tomes

  • Watching over sealed forbidden wings

It does not leave.

It does not need to.

In-World Saying

“In Katsudarma, the books are holy.
The dragon is the prayer.”

Lair and Lair Actions

🏛️ Katsudarma Library — Lair of Aurelion

Lair Description

The Katsudarma Library is not merely a building — it is a sacred construct-plane intersection, grown and written into existence by celestial architects. Endless cathedral halls stretch upward and outward, lined with floating shelves, radiant codices, and living tomes that turn their own pages.

Light pours in through towering stained-glass windows depicting the history of creation, the fall of gods, and truths never spoken aloud. Runes drift lazily through the air like dust motes, rearranging themselves into new scripture when no one is looking.

Sound behaves strangely here:

  • Footsteps echo like whispered prayers

  • Pages turn even in still air

  • Spoken lies sound slightly wrong, as if the room itself objects

At the heart of the library is the Archivum Sanctum, a vast circular chamber where Aurelion perches upon a floating plinth of radiant stone, surrounded by orbiting rings of books, glyphs, and living light.

The air smells of old parchment, ozone, and sanctified incense.

Time feels slower.

🕯️ Regional Effects

The region containing the Katsudarma Library is affected by Aurelion’s presence:

  1. Perfect Recall.
Any creature that finishes a long rest within the library has advantage on one Intelligence-based check of their choice made in the next 24 hours.

  2. Truth Resonance.
Deliberate lies spoken within the library echo faintly, granting advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks to detect deception.

  3. Scripture Drift.
Written text occasionally rearranges subtly to better reflect truth. Forged documents slowly correct themselves over 1d4 days.

  4. Celestial Calm.
Hostile emotions are dampened. Creatures have disadvantage on the first saving throw they make to resist being frightened or enraged by magic.

⚔️ Lair Actions (Initiative Count 20)

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Aurelion can take one of the following lair actions; it can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

Living Archive

Glowing books and glyphs orbit violently.

  • Each hostile creature of Aurelion’s choice within 60 feet must succeed on a DC 21 Intelligence saving throw or be restrained by spectral chains of script until the end of its next turn.

  • While restrained this way, the creature takes 14 (4d6) psychic damage as forbidden knowledge floods its mind.

Cathedral Light

Radiant light pours through the stained-glass windows.

  • Hostile creatures in a 40-foot-radius sphere centered on a point Aurelion can see must make a DC 21 Constitution saving throw.

  • On a failure, they take 22 (4d10) radiant damage and are blinded until the end of their next turn.

  • On a success, they take half damage and are not blinded.

Edict of Silence

The library itself demands stillness.

  • Aurelion casts silence (no concentration) centered on a point it can see.

  • Additionally, hostile creatures in the area must succeed on a DC 21 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of Aurelion until the end of their next turn.

Rewriting Reality

Runes surge across the floor and walls.

  • Aurelion chooses one hostile creature it can see. That creature must succeed on a DC 21 Charisma saving throw or have one active magical effect on it of Aurelion’s choice end immediately.

  • If no effect is ended, the creature instead takes 18 (4d8) radiant damage.

Archivist’s Summons

Living tomes animate to defend their master.

  • Aurelion summons 2d4 Sentinel Codices (use flying sword or animated armor statistics, dealing radiant damage instead).

  • The codices act on initiative count 20 and disappear after 1 minute or when reduced to 0 hit points.

🐉 Mythic Flavor: The Library Takes Sides

If the party truly desecrates the library (burning books, stealing forbidden codices, lying repeatedly, attacking celestials), you can add this:

The walls glow brighter. The air becomes heavy.
The library is no longer neutral.
It has chosen its Archivist.

All lair DCs increase by 1, and Aurelion gains advantage on its next attack each round.

📜 Using the Lair in Play

This lair is designed to:

  • Control movement

  • Punish spellcasting and lies

  • Reward clever, respectful play

  • Make combat feel like a trial, not a brawl

Players should feel like they are being judged by the building itself.

In-World Inscription (Found in the Archivum Sanctum)

“Knowledge is not power.
It is responsibility.
The dragon is not the guardian.
The truth is.”
