Reaper. When the baron casts a necromancy cantrip that normally targets only one creature, the spell can instead target two creatures within range.
Regeneration. The baron regains 10 hit points at the start of its turn if it has at least 1 hit point and isn't in sunlight or running water. If the baron takes radiant damage or damage from holy water, this trait doesn't function at the start of the baron's next turn.
Spider Climb. The baron can climb difficult surfaces, including upside down on ceilings, without needing to make an ability check.
Vampire Weaknesses. The baron has the following flaws:
- Forbiddance. The baron can't enter a residence without an invitation from one of the occupants.
- Stake to the Heart. The baron is destroyed if a piercing weapon made of wood is driven into its heart while it is incapacitated in its resting place.
- Sunlight Hypersensitivity. The baron takes 20 radiant damage when it starts its turn in sunlight. While in sunlight, it has disadvantage on all ability checks and attack rolls.
Spellcasting. The baron is a 6th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Wisdom (spell save DC 15, +7 to hit with spell attacks). The baron has following Death Domain Cleric spells prepared:
Cantrips (at will): Chill Touch, Guidance, Light, Sacred Flame, Toll the Dead
1st level (4 slots): Guiding Bolt, Inflict Wounds, Shield of Faith, Command, False Life, Ray of Sickness
2nd level (4 slots): Silence, Blindness/Deafness, Ray of Enfeeblement, Hold Person, Warding Bond
3rd level (3 slots): Animate Dead, Vampiric Touch, Spirit Guardians, Bestow Curse, Dispel Magic
Multiattack. The baron makes two attacks, only one of which can be a bite attack.
Mace of Weakness (+2). Melee Weapon Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage. On hit, the target must succeed on a DC 13 CON saving throw or take an additional 7 (2d6) necrotic damage and roll attack rolls with disadvantage on its next turn. On a success, the target takes only half damage and suffers no debuffs.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 8 (2d4 + 3) slashing damage. Instead of dealing damage, the baron can grapple the target (escape DC 13).
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one willing creature, or a creature that is grappled by the baron, incapacitated, or restrained. Hit: 6 (1d6 + 3) piercing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage. The target's hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the necrotic damage taken, and the baron regains hit points equal to that amount. The reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
Rejuvenate (Recharge 5-6). The baron prays to the Morninglord for divine aid. The dark powers of Barovia answer in the deity's stead, bestowing the baron with vigor. He regains 24 (4d8 + 8) hit points, and this ability become unusable until it recharges.
Unholy Rebuke. Upon being hit by an attack roll and before receiving the damage, the baron can use his reaction to reroll said attack with disadvantage. If the attack misses, the attacker instead rolls for damage against themselves, and takes that much necrotic damage. Furthermore, the attacker's maximum hit points are reduced by the amount of necrotic damage taken. This reduction lasts until the target finishes a long rest. The target dies if this effect reduces its hit point maximum to 0.
Description
Origin
Baron Vargas Vallakovich, the only son of "Granny Morgantha", was once the charismatic face of the town of Vallaki. He was as conniving as he was persuasive, systemically gaslighting the town's populace into thinking "everything is fine" and that they "have a chance against Strahd", while also removing the "undesirables" who opposed him, such as the at-the-time local pastor of St. Andral's Church.
Death and Undeath
Following the arrival of a new group of adventurers in Barovia, Baron Vargas became the town's de facto new pastor, and drastically ramped up the frequency of festivals held in Vallaki. One such festival was the Festival of the Blazing Sun, wherein he succumbed to Strahd von Zarovich and his vampire army. The baron's corpse would then unwillingly rise back from the dead, since serving the Dark Lord of Barovia as a vampire spawn death cleric.
