Primordial Titan

Aetheryx is older than the gods that sealed it. It does not age, cannot be banished, and is immune to effects that would alter its form against its will. It ignores difficult terrain created by stone, magma, or destroyed structures and cannot be knocked prone while flying or standing upon molten ground.

Molten Sovereignty

The ground within 10 miles of Aetheryx becomes superheated and unstable. Non-magical stone liquefies, rivers boil, and structures ignite. Siege weapons, constructs, and objects automatically take 1000 fire damage per round within this radius.

Magical items of rare quality or lower begin to warp after 1 minute of exposure.

World-Burning Aura

Aetheryx radiates escalating heat that intensifies with proximity.

  • Beyond 100 miles: The sky reddens and ash falls lightly.

  • 50 miles: Creatures take 25 fire damage per minute.

  • 10 miles: 350 fire damage per round.

  • 1 mile: 750 fire damage per round.

  • 1,000 ft: 1,500 fire damage per round.

  • 100 ft: 2,200 fire damage per round; resistance to fire is ignored unless granted by a deity or artifact of equal cosmic origin.

Creatures reduced to 0 HP by this aura are reduced to ash instantly.

Aetheryx can suppress this aura while using its Ashen Veil trait.

Ashen Veil (Shapechanger)

Aetheryx can magically alter its size to any form between Gargantuan and Medium and may assume the appearance of any humanoid creature. While transformed:

  • Its heat aura is suppressed.

  • Its damage immunities remain.

  • It retains its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores.

  • It can cast spells as if using a 20th-level spellcaster progression.

Its eyes glow faintly like embers, and its body radiates unnatural warmth.

If reduced to 0 HP in a disguised form, Aetheryx reverts instantly to its true form and regains half its maximum hit points.

Living Cataclysm

Whenever Aetheryx takes more than 1,000 damage in a single round, the earth responds violently:

  • Volcanic vents rupture within 5 miles.

  • Lava fissures open in random directions.

  • A rain of molten stone falls in a 2-mile radius (400 fire damage, Dex save DC 28 for half).

This effect can trigger once per round.

Solar Core

Aetheryx’s heart is a fragment of the First Flame that ignited creation. It sheds bright light for 50 miles and dim light for an additional 50 miles when unsuppressed.

If Aetheryx is reduced below 25% HP, its Solar Core destabilizes:

  • All fire damage it deals ignores immunity.

  • Its speed doubles.

  • All creatures within 10 miles take 290 radiant damage at the start of their turn.

Ancestor of the Phoenix

All phoenixes draw power from Aetheryx’s bound essence. While within 100 miles of it:

  • Phoenix creatures gain advantage on all attack rolls and saving throws.

  • If slain, they revive instantly at full health once per encounter.

Aetheryx may telepathically command any phoenix within this range.

Divine Seal (Dormant State)

Aetheryx is bound beneath a dormant volcano by ancient divine chains that siphon and disperse its power. While sealed:

  • It cannot leave its volcanic chamber.

  • Its aura is reduced to half strength beyond 50 miles.

  • Gods cannot approach within 5 miles of the seal without taking 1000 radiant damage per round from backlash.

If the seal is broken, all volcanic systems within 500 miles awaken simultaneously.

Actions

Multiattack

Aetheryx makes three attacks: one with its Beak of Cataclysm and two with its Talon Rend, or replaces one attack with Wing Catastrophe if available.

Beak of Cataclysm

Melee Weapon Attack: +25 to hit, reach 1 mile, one target.
Hit: 5,000 piercing + 12,000 fire + 2,000 radiant.

If the target is Huge or smaller, it must succeed on a DC 28 Constitution saving throw or ignite internally, taking 900 fire damage at the start of each of its turns. A creature reduced to 0 HP by this effect is disintegrated into ash.

Talon Rend

Melee Weapon Attack: +25 to hit, reach 1 mile, one target.
Hit: 19,000 slashing + 3,000 fire.

The ground beneath the target ruptures in a 1-mile fissure. All creatures within 500 feet must make a DC 28 Dexterity save or fall into magma (1,200 fire per round inside).

Wing Catastrophe (Recharge 5–6)

Aetheryx beats its 15-mile wings.

Each creature in a 10-mile cone must make a DC 28 Strength saving throw.

On a failure:

  • 8,500 bludgeoning

  • 9,500 fire

  • Knocked prone

  • Thrown up to 3 miles

Structures automatically collapse. Mountains may shear or avalanche at DM discretion.

Solar Incineration (Recharge 6)

A beam of condensed stellar flame erupts from Aetheryx’s core in a 50-mile-long, 1-mile-wide line.

Creatures in the line make a DC 28 Dexterity save.

Failure:

  • 160,000 fire

  • 140,000 radiant

  • Resistance ignored

Success: Half damage.

The terrain becomes permanently glassed and uninhabitable.

Eruption Dominion (1/Day)

Aetheryx commands the mantle of the world.

Every volcano within 500 miles erupts simultaneously.

Each creature within 50 miles takes:

  • 27,000 fire

  • 3,500 bludgeoning (falling debris)

The sky becomes heavily obscured for 1d10 days.

Legendary Actions

Cinder Pulse (1 Action)

Creatures within 1 mile take 2,000 fire damage (DC 28 Con for half).

Molten Shift (1 Action)

Aetheryx moves up to half its flying speed without provoking opportunity attacks. The space it leaves becomes molten terrain.

Blazing Talon (2 Actions)

Makes one Talon Rend attack.

Flare Nova (3 Actions)

Aetheryx releases a solar shockwave in a 5-mile radius.

Creatures must make a DC 28 Constitution save or take:

  • 7,900 fire

  • Blinded until end of next turn

Mythic Actions

Mythic Trait: First Flame Cannot Die

When Aetheryx is reduced to 0 HP in its true form, it explodes in a supervolcanic detonation.

  • 300-mile radius.

  • 95,000 fire damage.

  • The sky darkens globally for 1d10 years.

  • The landscape becomes an ashen wasteland.

Unless slain by a deity or extinguished by primordial ice older than the world itself, Aetheryx reforms within one year inside its volcanic prison.

After this detonation, the encounter enters Phase Two (Mythic Phase), and Aetheryx returns with 50% of its hit points and access to additional legendary actions.

(Activates after First Flame Cannot Die triggers — Phase Two begins.)

When Aetheryx reforms at 50% HP, its Solar Core fractures and becomes unstable.

While in Mythic Phase:

  • All fire damage ignores immunity.

  • Its flying speed doubles.

  • The sky within 200 miles becomes blood-red.

It gains access to the following Mythic Actions:

Stellar Rupture (Costs 2 Actions)

A tear in the sky opens above a point Aetheryx can see within 20 miles.

A column of solar plasma descends.

  • 23,000 radiant

  • 25,000 fire

  • 3-mile radius

  • DC 30 Dexterity save

On failure: creatures are reduced to ash if dropped to 0 HP.

Mantle Break (Costs 3 Actions)

The planet’s crust fractures in a 20-mile radius.

  • Earthquakes (DC 28 Dex or fall prone)

  • Lava geysers erupt randomly (3,000-12,000 fire)

  • Terrain becomes impossible to traverse

Lasts 1 minute.

Phoenix Ascendancy (Costs 3 Actions, 1/Encounter)

Aetheryx sheds fragments of itself into the sky.

1d8 Elder Phoenixes (CR 25+) manifest from its flames and act immediately after it in initiative.

If destroyed, they explode for 6,000-14,000 fire damage each. (within 3 miles of Aetheryx)

Description

Aetheryx, First Flame of the World

Progenitor of the Phoenix • Titan of the Cinder Crown • The Sun That Walked

Before there were gods…

There was heat.

When the world was still a cooling wound in the void — when oceans were steam and mountains were soft — something vast circled the forming sphere like a living star. It was not born of worship. It was not shaped by divine hands.

It was friction. Pressure. Creation grinding against itself.

From that violence came Aetheryx.

Appearance

In its true form, Aetheryx is a colossal avian titan with a wingspan stretching fifteen miles and a body six miles long from burning crown to trailing plumes of molten feathers. Its form appears carved from blackened volcanic glass, cracked open by rivers of flowing magma beneath.

Its wings resemble tectonic plates layered in flame, each feather a blade of burning stone. Lava drips constantly from its talons, hardening into islands below when it flies. Its eyes burn white-gold like twin newborn suns, and its chest glows brightest of all — the Solar Core visible through fractured armor.

When it moves, continents tremble.

When it breathes, the horizon ignites.

Even in slumber, it radiates a heat that can be felt over a hundred miles away — a dull, oppressive warmth that makes the sky blush red.

Before the Gods

Aetheryx existed before the first pantheon claimed dominion over sky and sea.

It soared freely across a molten world, shaping continents unintentionally. Its wingbeats carved valleys. Its talons tore mountains from the mantle. Entire oceans boiled at its passing. It did not do this with malice.

It simply was.

In that primordial age, it was worshiped not by mortals — for none yet lived — but by the elements themselves. Fire elementals coalesced in its wake. Magma giants rose from crust torn open by its flight. It was less a creature and more a force of planetary evolution.

But as the gods emerged from belief and divine spark, they sought order.

And Aetheryx was not orderly.

It could not be reasoned with. It would not kneel. And worst of all — it did not need worship to exist.

The gods feared something that predated them.

So they waged war.

The War of Burning Skies

The conflict lasted an age.

Storm gods hurled oceans into the sky to quench it. Earth gods tried to bury it beneath mountains. Celestial hosts descended like meteors.

Aetheryx burned them all.

Divine weapons melted before striking its core. Entire minor deities were reduced to drifting ash. The sky was permanently scarred — some scholars claim the aurora borealis is a lingering wound from that war.

In the end, the gods did not defeat Aetheryx.

They trapped it.

Pooling their power, they drove it into the mantle of the world and forged colossal divine chains from crystallized faith and stellar iron. These chains anchored it beneath what would one day become a towering volcano — now dormant only because its heat is contained and siphoned.

The prison lies deep below a mountain known as the Cinder Crown, in a chamber large enough to house kingdoms.

Even now, gods do not approach within miles of the seal.

The backlash burns them.

Progenitor of the Phoenix

When the gods bound Aetheryx, they could not extinguish its flame. Instead, they siphoned fragments of its Solar Core to stabilize the prison.

Those fragments escaped. From sparks of stolen divinity, the first phoenix rose — smaller, weaker, mortal in comparison — yet bearing a sliver of Aetheryx’s essence.

Every phoenix that has ever lived is descended from those fragments.

Their rebirth is not their own power. It is inherited. Each resurrection echoes Aetheryx’s inability to truly die.

Phoenixes instinctively feel drawn toward volcanic regions, toward heat, toward ley lines that hum with imprisoned flame. When near the Cinder Crown, they grow stronger, their fire brighter — though few understand why.

Some ancient phoenixes whisper in dreams of a sleeping ancestor. A burning monarch. A sky that once belonged to them.

If Aetheryx were ever freed, phoenixes across the world would feel it instantly.

And they would answer.

The Present Slumber

The volcano above its prison has long since gone dormant. Civilizations have risen nearby, mistaking the mountain for dead stone. It is not dead.

The lava deep beneath remains impossibly hot — hotter than natural magma should be. Rivers of molten rock glow nearly white. Divine chains hum constantly, draining excess power into distant ley lines.

Sometimes the mountain trembles. Sometimes the sky glows red for hours. Sometimes ash falls when there is no fire. These are signs that Aetheryx dreams. And in its dreams, it remembers a sky without chains.

Mind of the First Flame

Unlike mindless kaiju, Aetheryx possesses ancient intelligence. It remembers the world before structure. It remembers the faces of gods who struck it. It remembers betrayal. It does not rage constantly.

It waits. If ever freed, it would not rampage blindly. It would rise slowly. Deliberately. And the sky would burn again.

Lair and Lair Actions

Beneath a long-dead volcano lies a hollowed god-wound in the world — a cavern so vast it could swallow kingdoms whole.

The mountain above appears dormant. Cold. Silent.

It isn’t.

Deep below the crust, an ocean of molten stone churns in slow, tidal rhythms around a colossal chamber of blackened obsidian. Rivers of magma spiral inward toward a central abyss where Aetheryx slumbers — wings folded like a continent-sized shroud, embers pulsing faintly beneath cracked volcanic armor.

The walls glow with veins of living fire. The air itself shimmers and distorts, hot enough to ignite steel. Ash falls constantly, though nothing burns.

Ancient divine chains — thicker than mountain ranges — pierce through the titan’s wings and anchor into the planet’s mantle. They hum with strained celestial energy, siphoning off its power into distant ley lines to prevent eruption.

The lava here is unnaturally bright — nearly white — hotter than any natural magma. Even gods feel discomfort within miles of this chamber.

And sometimes…

When Aetheryx exhales in its sleep, the entire mountain above trembles — and the sky for a hundred miles glows red, as if dawn briefly forgot to leave.
