Description
Ayakashi is the collective name given to yokai. In western Japan, ayakashi are believed to be the vengeful spirits of those who died at sea, attempting to capture more people to join them.
They appear primarily at night, as it is dark and there is no natural light above them, but they can also emerge as flashing lights near bodies of water, cemeteries, hovering in public places where people cannot see them, and generally in uncomfortable places for people. When you see the lights of an ayakashi, you can be sure there are more of them nearby.
At night, they take on a material form, though not a specific shape; they all share the same characteristics: a dark, purple material cloud with numerous eyes. Ayakashi can be tiny or colossal, varying in shape and size: as the term ayakashi refers to the collective of yokai, the greater the number of eyes, the larger the creature.
It is wrong to assume that an Ayakashi is not in a place: they usually hide within people, influencing their actions, making them feel miserable, and trying to lure them into the spirit realm.
Although they have many eyes, they guide themselves mostly based on their sense of smell, as they're night creatures and arent used to sunlight. They never attack first, only doing so when they are noticed by living creatures.
"There is no well in that place. A long time ago, there was someone who needed water and went up to land in the same way and went missing. That woman was the ayakashi." (source: Kaidanoi no Tsue, Edo period)
