Traits
Semi-Aquatic. The Andrewsarchus can hold its breath for 15 minutes.
Keen Smell. The Andrewsarchus has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.
Sure-Footed. The Andrewsarchus has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock it prone or shove it.
Charge. If the Andrewsarchus moves at least 20 feet straight toward a target and then hits it with a Crushing Bite attack on the same turn, the target takes an extra 5 (1d10) bludgeoning damage. If the target is a Large or smaller creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone.
Relentless (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). If the Andrewsarchus takes 14 damage or less that would reduce it to 0 hit points, it is reduced to 1 hit point instead.
Bonded Mount. The Andrewsarchus can be bonded to one creature. While the Andrewsarchus is within 10 feet of its bonded rider, it gains the following benefits:
- Relentless Pursuit. The Andrewsarchus has advantage on saving throws against being restrained. It ignores difficult terrain that is nonmagical, and its speed cannot be reduced by magical or nonmagical effects (such as the slow spell).
- Hinder the Quarry. When the andrewsarchus hits a creature with its Crushing Bite, the target's speed is reduced by 10 feet until the start of the andrewsarchus's next turn.
Actions
Crushing Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) bludgeoning damage.
Bellowing Roar (Recharge 5–6). The Andrewsarchus lets out a terrifying roar. Each creature of its choice that is within 30 feet of the Andrewsarchus and can hear it must succeed on a DC 11 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened for 30 seconds (5 rounds). A frightened creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.
Description
Large Beast, Unaligned
The andrewsarchus, or "Hell Hog," is a massive, bone-crushing scavenger that roams the fringes of civilization. While its size and terrifying jaws suggest a fierce predator, it is an opportunistic scavenger by nature, preferring to feast on what others have left behind. They are most commonly found near old battlegrounds, where they pick through the remains of the fallen.
Reluctant Predator, Fierce Defender. An andrewsarchus rarely initiates a fight with healthy creatures, preferring to wait for its target to be wounded or hindered. However, their cautious nature vanishes when their own are threatened. They are formidable defenders of their packmates, territory, and hard-earned carcasses. When backed into a corner or defending a kill, a hell hog becomes a whirlwind of aggression, using its massive bulk to shield its interests.
The Iron Bond. This defensive instinct translates perfectly to domestic life. Once a bond is forged, the beast becomes a lifelong companion, acting as both a sturdy mount and a ferocious guardian. In battle, a bonded hell hog is a relentless force, willing to fight to its literal last breath to protect its rider.
