Traits

Cosmic Constant

Azrael cannot be killed. If reduced to 0 hit points, he instead advances to the next phase. In Final Silence, if reduced to 0, he does not fall — reality itself rejects the attempt. His hit points reset to 400 and combat continues.

He cannot be banished, imprisoned, erased, wished away, or removed from existence.

Inevitable Presence

Time effects do not affect Azrael. He cannot be slowed, hastened, aged, stopped, or displaced by temporal magic.

Immutable Mind

Effects that influence emotions automatically fail.

Dual Dominion

Azrael counts as both Celestial and Fiend for all interactions. He cannot be turned, controlled, or commanded.

Unpreventable Strike

Damage dealt by Nightbringer cannot be reduced, resisted, absorbed, redirected, or prevented by any means.

Skills of the Ages

Azrael has proficiency in each skill.

NIGHTBRINGER (Weapon Trait)

Azrael can freely shift Nightbringer between Longsword and Scythe between attacks without using an action.

Phase I — Calm Executor (1200–801 HP)

Measured. Controlled.

Battlefield control. Precise strikes.

Aura: All creatures within 60 ft. cannot regain HP.

Phase II — Reaper (800–401 HP)

Wings expand. Halo fractures.

Speed increases to 90 ft., fly 180 ft.

Multiattack becomes 4 attacks.

Scythe attacks now cleave in 60 ft. lines.

Aura: All creatures begin their turn taking 20 necrotic damage (no resistance).

Legendary Action added:
Harvest (3 Actions) – All creatures below 150 HP must make DC 26 Con save or drop to 0.

Phase III — Final Silence (400–0 HP)

Everything goes quiet.

Sound dampens.
Light dims.

Azrael gains:

  • Resistance to all damage (even “true” damage from others)

  • 5 Legendary Actions per round

  • Automatic critical hits against creatures below half HP

Aura of Silence (120 ft):
No teleportation.
No resurrection.
No healing.
No summoning.

Heartseeker can now target up to 3 creatures.

If Reduced to 0 in Final Silence

Reality rejects the outcome.

Azrael regains 400 HP.

All creatures must make DC 28 Con save or drop to 1 HP.

He does not speak.

He simply continues.

Actions

Multiattack (Calm Executor)

Azrael makes three attacks in any combination.

Nightbringer — Longsword Form

Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 20 ft., one target.
Hit: 45 (8d8 + 10) true damage.

If the target is reduced to 0 HP by this attack, resurrection fails unless Azrael wills otherwise.

Nightbringer — Scythe Form

Melee Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, reach 30 ft., up to three targets in an arc.

Hit: 38 (6d10 + 10) true damage.

Creatures reduced below half HP by this attack must succeed on a DC 26 Con save or have their soul partially severed (disadvantage on all rolls until end of next turn).

HEARTSEEKER

Azrael forms an arrow of inevitability.

Ranged Weapon Attack: +19 to hit, range 600 ft., one target.

On hit: The target must succeed on a DC 28 Constitution saving throw.

On failure: The target is erased from existence.

On success: The target takes 150 true damage.

Legendary creatures have advantage.

Azrael will not use this lightly.

Bonus Actions

Shift of Sovereignty

Azrael instantly changes Nightbringer’s form (Longsword ↔ Scythe) and may immediately move up to half his speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Veil of Inevitability

Azrael chooses one creature he can see within 120 ft. Until the start of his next turn:

• The target’s speed becomes 0
• The target cannot gain advantage
• The next time Azrael hits that creature, the attack is a critical hit

No save.

Wings of the Threshold (Recharge 5–6)

Azrael beats his wings silently. All creatures of his choice within 60 ft. must succeed on a DC 26 Strength save or be knocked prone and pushed 40 ft.

Creatures reduced below half HP by this effect are frightened until the end of their next turn.

Reactions

Inevitable Correction

When a creature within 120 ft. would regain hit points, Azrael halves the healing (no save).

If used in Final Silence, healing becomes 0 instead.

Deny Resurrection

When a creature attempts to cast revivify, raise dead, wish, or similar magic within 1 mile, Azrael may simply say:

“No.”

The spell fails.

Step Beyond Time

When hit by an attack, Azrael may reduce the damage to 0 and teleport up to 60 ft.

Legendary Actions

LEGENDARY ACTIONS (3/round)

  • Step Between Moments – Teleport up to 120 ft.

  • Soul Weight – One creature must succeed on DC 26 Wis save or be restrained by existential dread until end of next turn.

  • Sever Thread (Costs 2 Actions) – One creature below 100 HP drops to 0.

Mythic Actions

The Pillar of the Cycle (Mythic Trait)

When Azrael first drops to 0 HP, he does not fall. Instead:

• All light within 300 ft. dims to twilight.
• All creatures must make a DC 28 Wisdom saving throw or be restrained by existential dread for 1 minute.
• Azrael regains 400 HP.
• He enters Final Silence.

This transformation ends all active magical effects below 9th level within 300 ft.

MYTHIC ACTIONS (Final Silence Only)

Azrael can take 3 Mythic Actions at the end of another creature’s turn.

Absolute Stillness

All creatures within 120 ft. must succeed on DC 28 Con save or have their speed reduced to 0 and lose reactions until the end of their next turn.

Severance

Azrael targets one creature below half HP. That creature must succeed on a DC 28 Con save or drop to 0 HP.

Heartseeker — Final Mercy (Costs 3 Actions)

Azrael forms an arrow and fires it.

Up to 3 creatures must make a DC 28 Constitution saving throw.

On failure: erased from existence.
On success: 150 true damage.

Legendary creatures automatically succeed once per combat.

Description

Azrael is not a tyrant, nor a judge. He is the necessary end of all things.

Gargantuan in stature, his form resembles a cathedral wrought from twilight and dawn. Vast feathered wings stretch like a closing horizon, their edges dissolving into smoke. A fractured halo orbits behind his veiled face, inscribed with shifting celestial script. Where he stands, sound lowers and light dims, not in fear — but in acknowledgment.

He does not rage.
He does not threaten.
He does not bargain.

He arrives.

Azrael is both Celestial and Fiend, sovereign by origin over Heaven and Hell alike. Though capable of conquering both realms, he has never desired to. His purpose is singular: the preservation of the cycle of Life and Death.

He cannot be slain, for Death cannot die while Life endures.

Even gods pity him.

Lair and Lair Actions

(The Threshold of Passing)

When fighting in a place tied to death — battlefield, divine court, soul crossing, or celestial plane — Azrael gains lair actions.

On initiative count 20 (losing ties):

Silence the Living

All non-undead creatures cannot speak until next round. Spellcasting with verbal components fails.

Open the Veil

Spectral forms of departed souls fill a 60 ft. radius area. That area becomes difficult terrain. Creatures inside have disadvantage on attack rolls.

Weight of the End

Choose up to three creatures. Each must make DC 26 Wisdom save or suffer vulnerability to the next instance of damage they take before next round.

Close the Gate (Recharge 6)

All teleportation, planar travel, and summoning effects immediately end within the lair.

Regional Effects

(While Azrael resides in a location tied to death or remains there for 24 hours or more)

The region within 6 miles of his presence is altered by the weight of the Cycle.

1. The Quieting

Sound dampens unnaturally.

• Thunder rolls softer.
• Shouts feel distant.
• Creatures have disadvantage on Performance checks involving loud sound.
• Any creature that dies within the region passes peacefully — no death saving throws. They simply stabilize at 0 or perish cleanly.

There is no screaming in Azrael’s shadow.

2. The Thinning Veil

The boundary between life and death grows delicate.

• Creatures within the region can faintly see silhouettes of departed souls at twilight.
• Speak with Dead functions without expending a spell slot (once per long rest per caster).
• Resurrection magic requires a DC 20 spellcasting ability check. On failure, the soul does not return.

Not because Azrael denies it.

Because the passage is orderly.

3. Weight of Finality

Mortals feel introspective.

• Creatures have disadvantage on Deception checks.
• Creatures have advantage on Insight checks.
• Hostile creatures must succeed on a DC 18 Wisdom save to initiate combat without provocation.

People reconsider violence.

Not out of fear.

But because something reminds them time is finite.

4. Unfinished Business

If a creature with unresolved purpose dies in the region, its spirit lingers for 1 minute before passing. During that minute:

• It can speak clearly.
• It feels no pain.
• It cannot attack or influence objects.

Azrael does not interfere.

He allows closure.

5. The Sky at Dusk

Even at noon, the light feels like late evening.

Shadows lengthen subtly.

Stars are faintly visible at night — even through clouds.

Clerics of life feel uneasy.

Clerics of death feel calm.

If Azrael Enters Final Silence in the Region

All regional effects intensify:

• Resurrection automatically fails.
• Undead within the region crumble unless sustained by divine power.
• Creatures reduced to 0 HP die instantly unless Azrael wills otherwise.
• Time feels slower, though mechanically unchanged.

And the most unsettling effect:

No creature within the region dreams.

Sleep becomes empty.

When He Leaves

The regional effects fade over 1d10 days.

The silence lifts.
The veil thickens.
Life grows louder again.

But those who lived there remember.

Not fear.

Not terror.

Just the feeling that something vast was watching.
