Traits

Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the Alkonost fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Joy Overwhelming. The bliss caused by the Alkonost’s magic can raise a creature to unnaturally ecstatic heights. While a creature is under the effects of a spell cast by the Alkonost, it takes 1d6 Psychic damage at the end of each of its turns, plus an additional 1d6 Psychic damage for each consecutive turn beyond the first that it remains under such an effect. This damage does not trigger a new saving throw to end the spell’s effects on the creature, even if specified so by the spell’s description.

Actions

Multiattack. The Alkonost makes three Brilliant Trill attacks. It can replace two attacks with a use of Spellcasting.

Brilliant Trill. Melee or Ranged Attack Roll: +10, reach 5 ft. or range 60 ft. Hit: 18 (2d12 + 5) Psychic damage. The target has Disadvantage on its next saving throw to resist the Charmed condition, made within the next minute.

Radiant Canticle (Recharge 5-6). The Alkonost releases a soaring verse of impossible beauty. Wisdom Saving Throw: DC 18, each creature within 60 feet of the Alkonost that can hear it and is not immune to the Charmed condition. Failure: The target takes 36 (8d8) Psychic damage and has the Charmed condition and while it has the Charmed Condition it is also Incapacitated, repeating the save at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. After 1 minute, it succeeds automatically. Success: Half damage.

Spellcasting. The Alkonost casts one of the following spells, requiring no spell components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 18):

At Will: Charm Person, Color Spray, Cure Wounds, Hideous Laughter, Suggestion

3/Day Each: Mass Cure Wounds, Mass Suggestion, Irresistible Dance, Modify Memory

1/Day Each: Antipathy/Sympathy (only Sympathy option), Heal, Dominate Monster

Legendary Actions

Legendary Action Uses: 3. Immediately after another creature’s turn, the Alkonost can expend a use to take one of the following actions. The Alkonost regains all expended uses at the start of each of its turns.

Crescendo. Every creature under the effects of Joy Overwhelming immediately takes its damage and increases its turn count for taking extra damage from this trait by 1.

Dazzling Reposition. A burst of kaleidoscopic feathers flares around the Alkonost. Dexterity Saving Throw: DC 18, each creature within 10 feet of the Alkonost that can see it. Failure: The target is Blinded until it spends half of its movement rubbing the colours out of its eyes. Failure or Success: The Alkonost can move up to half its Flying Speed.

Prechorus. The Alkonost uses Spellcasting to cast an At Will spell, or makes one Brilliant Trill attack.

Description

The Mythical Birds, Alkonost and Sirin, are thought to embody the duality of mortal experience; two of the same kind and yet direct counterparts of one another. The Alkonost, perched high upon the branches of the World Tree, represents the vast joy and happiness that life has to offer. The Sirin, nesting deep within the roots of the Underworld, gives voice to the sorrow and melancholy that define the mortal state. It is believed that their legendary songs can evoke emotions of depth unparalleled to anything one might ever experience in this vast world, stirring the heart of the auditor with profound bliss or crushing despair.

Birds of Joy and Sorrow. Both of these ageless chimeral beings have the body of a bird and the head of a woman. Like disparate siblings, the Alkonost gleams with vibrant kaleidoscopic plumes, wearing a smile so honest and warm it rivals the coming of springtime. In absolute contrast, the Sirin’s feathers are sootier than the darkest of moonless skies, while its mournful gaze can crush the dauntless soul with a single glance. Though forever bound, the two are never seen together. They are known to cross the boundaries between the Real and the Hidden World, their songs echoing through lands gripped by despair or dulled by complacency, rekindling the fire of mortal hearts. Tales speak of how their passing can alter the course of destiny, leading people to pray for their arrival. For the song of the Alkonost may awaken a dying land to hope, while the voice of the Sirin can remind even the proudest or most affluent of what they stand to lose.

Chorus of Divine Balance. It is said that none may fathom the true vastness of their own emotionscape until they hear the immortal songs of the Alkonost and the Sirin. To grasp this notion, adventurers have sought them far and wide, whether to carve their names into legend, plead to their primordial wisdom, or for a chance to behold divinity itself. To become enthralled by such a song can enlighten one’s spirit or break it irrevocably. To witness both in a single lifetime is to be driven into madness or ascend to levels of awareness beyond the confines imposed by their mortal state. For when the melody of joy and sorrow meets as one, even the gods fall silent to listen. Myth has it that if either of these supernal birds were to perish, it would be an unthinkable loss for the world as a whole, as the balance of collectively felt emotion would shift. Yet in time, as is the nature of spirits, the collective emotions of humankind will give rise to them again, born anew from the ever-shifting harmony of mortal joy and despair. Thus, the balance endures, wavering, but never broken.
