Blazing Nemesis. The severed head of the Banewitch’s false accuser hovers next to it. If targeted by an attack, the head is treated as an extension of the Banewitch itself. The Banewitch can maintain Concentration on up to two spells at a time, one cast through its Spellcasting list and one cast through its Head of the Accuser’s list. If the Banewitch loses Concentration while it is concentrating on two spells, it can choose which spell it wishes to maintain.
Ethereal Sight. The Banewitch can see 60 feet into the Ethereal Plane when it is on the Material Plane, and vice versa.
Incorporeal Movement. The Banewitch can move through other creatures and objects as if they were Difficult Terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) Force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.
Flaming Touch. Melee or Ranged Attack Roll: +6, reach 5 ft or range 60 ft. Hit: 17 (4d6 + 3) Fire damage.
Etherealness. The Banewitch casts Etherealness requiring no spell components, to enter the Ethereal Plane from the Material Plane, or vice versa. It is visible on the Material Plane while it is in the Border Ethereal, and vice versa, yet it can’t affect or be affected by anything on the other plane.
Horrifying Visage. Wisdom Saving Throw: DC 14, each creature in a 60-foot Cone that can see the Banewitch and isn’t an Undead. Failure: The target has the Frightened condition until the start of the Banewitch’s next turn. Failure by 5 or More: The target also ages 3d6 years. The aging effect can be reversed with Greater Restoration, but only within 24 hours of it occurring. Success: The target is immune to this Banewitch’s Horrifying Visage for 24 hours.
Scorching Gaze (Recharge 5-6). The Banewitch casts Scorching Ray (level 6 version), requiring no spellcasting components, using the same spellcasting ability as Spellcasting.
Spellcasting. The Banewitch casts one of the following spells, requiring no Material components and using Charisma as the spellcasting ability (spell save DC 14, +6 spell attacks):
At Will: Elementalism (Beckon Fire only), Thaumaturgy
3/Day Each: Burning Hands, False Life
1/Day Each: Fireball, Fire Shield (Warm Shield Version)
Head of the Accuser. The Banewitch uses its Spellcasting to cast one of the following spells through the severed head of her accuser, requiring no Material components:
At Will: Bane, Command, Vicious Mockery (level 5 version)
3/Day Each: Blindness/Deafness, Hold Person, Zone of Truth
1/Day Each: Compulsion, Confusion
Description
Mortal law is not morality. It is a tool, a means to enforce commonly agreed compromises, to put minds at ease and quell public unrest. In farcical mockeries of legal procedures, corrupt lawspeakers and judges have bestowed capital punishment upon individuals shunned by their peers, well-aware that the accused was guiltless. Thus, the hand of judgment falls upon those least deserving, insidious motives guiding it astray to preserve those most privileged. But what happens to the mighty and self-righteous when the past returns to haunt them?
Vengeance from the Stake. A Banewitch is the ghost of a person wrongfully condemned to burn at the stake, as punishment for a crime they did not commit. The smoldering coals of their soul refuse to pass into the afterlife, anchored to the Real world by the promise of vengeance against its accusers. The flames of retribution emanate brightly in its wake, engulfing those who took pleasure in its suffering or had a hand in its indictment. Rather than inherently malicious, a Banewitch is a purpose-driven entity: it would not see another innocent harmed, yet would stop at nothing to accomplish its mission of reprisal, sparing no one who would dare stand in its way.
Headhunter. A Banewitch’s first act is to murder the one it deems most blameful for its ill fate, often the judge who pronounced its sentence. In this deed, a portion of the accuser’s conscience binds with the specter, manifesting as a severed head that hovers beside it. Bereft of sanity, the head mumbles words of twisted meaning, the same it formerly uttered in pretentious sanctimony during the Banewitch’s trial. Tethered to the ghost, the accuser is thus compelled to witness everything that follows, stoically serving the Banewitch along its path of blood and fire, until the last of its prosecutors lie broken, and its vengeance is complete.
