Traits

Amphibious. The Bolotnik can breathe air and water.

Animal Mimicry. The Bolotnik can mimic simple animal sounds it has heard, such as the quacking of a duck and the clucking of a chicken. A creature that hears the sounds can tell they are imitations with a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Insight) check.

Brutish Kidnapper. The Bolotnik deals double damage to objects and structures. Additionally, the Bolotnik needn’t spend extra movement to move a creature it is grappling.

Swamp Ambusher. While the Bolotnik remains motionless in a swamp, it is indistinguishable from a barnacle-covered rock. While in this state, creatures can tell the Bolotnik is not a rock on a successful DC 15 Wisdom (Perception) check. While hidden, the Bolotnik has Advantage on Strength-related D20 Tests made against any creature it has surprised.

Actions

Multiattack. The Bolotnik makes two Smash attacks.

Smash. Melee Attack Roll: +9, reach 10 ft. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) Bludgeoning damage.

Foul Breath (Recharge 5-6). The Bolotnik exhales noxious gas in a 30-foot Cone. Constitution Saving Throw: DC 14, each creature in the area. Failure: 18 (4d8) Poison damage, and the creature must either choose to spend its next Action regurgitating or have the Poisoned condition for 1 minute. Success: Half damage only.

Bonus Actions

Drowner. While the Bolotnik is within a swamp, it can attempt to Grapple a creature within its reach, forcing a DC 17 Strength saving throw. On failure, the Bolotnik drags the creature underwater, causing it to immediately begin to Suffocate. This effect ends if the grapple ends.

Description

The swamps of Zamanora are home to carnivorous plants, giant insects, venomous fish, and predatory beasts. Life in a swamp is a constant battlefor survival. But above all such creatures, a single spirit reigns supreme: the Bolotnik, a behemoth of barnacles and muscle that perches within the peat like a king upon his throne.

Drowners. Extremely territorial beings, Bolotnik do not suffer trespassers within their domain. Should one blunder into a swamp they have claimed, the Bolotnik will lurk beneath the mire, confusing and misdirecting their prey with skilled mimicry. Once they have lured the hapless wanderer close to the water, the spirit will lash out, snatching their victim and condemning them to a watery grave. Even those few who have survived an encounter with the Bolotnik’s horrible hunting rituals often find themselves riddled with disease, eventually succumbing to an untimely demise.

Reasonable Behemoths. Even though it may seem unthinkable to bargain with such brutes, Bolotnik are known to strike accords with mortals and uphold them honorably. People who have treated the Bolotnik with respect and consideration may receive its help when their wagon is stuck in the mud, or be granted safe passage through the bog to shorten their journey. However, woe to those who would wrong a Bolotnik, for should the accord be broken, the spirit will amble out of its land to wreak its revenge upon dams, watermills, cottages, granaries, and anything else in its path.
