Actions

Multiattack. Bærn'aard makes three Talon attacks.

Talon. Melee Weapon Attack: +10 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 18 (3d8 + 5) piercing damage.

Blood Barrage (Recharge 5–6). Bærn'aard launches a spray of blood in a 90-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw, taking 27 (6d8) necrotic damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one.

Description

Avian demons called hazvongels haunt the windswept skies of Pandemonium, preying on lost and weary travelers. Hazvongels resemble enormous, crimson crows with tattered feathers and a dozen legs. Their wings constantly drip blood, which they gather in their many talons and fling in a gruesome rain. Hazvongels sometimes soar in the skies of the Abyss, where they originate, but they migrate to and from Pandemonium throughout their existence.

Surely the most infamous of these creatures is Bærn'aard, a hazvongel bound in eternal companionship to the archlich Vigrid the Unliving. Larger than most of its kind, Bærn'aard’s body is a grotesque mass of ragged crimson plumage and sinewed limbs, its dozen legs ending in barbed talons blackened with centuries of blood. The creature’s wings span wider than a war galley’s sail, and each beat scatters a rain of warm gore that hisses when it strikes stone.

Bærn'aard is seldom encountered alone. For uncounted millennia it has served as the shadow and herald of Vigrid, circling the skies wherever the archlich’s schemes unfold. The bond between them is said to be older than many kingdoms of Agaea, forged in the depths of the Abyss and sealed through unspeakable rites. When Vigrid falls and is reborn through his profane immortality, Bærn'aard invariably returns to him, as though drawn by a chain no mortal eye can see.

Legends across Agaea record the pair’s passage through centuries of ruin. Entire cities have been reduced to charnel fields beneath Bærn'aard’s shadow, their defenders broken long before the archlich himself arrived. Many scholars believe the creature serves not merely as a companion, but as a living omen of Vigrid’s return, for wherever the great crimson crow is seen circling, catastrophe soon follows.
