Amphibious. The dragon can breathe air and water.
Sanguine Instinct. The dragon has advantage on attack rolls against creatures that aren’t at their hit point maximum.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 7 (1d10 + 2) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6) necrotic damage. If the target isn’t at its hit point maximum, the dragon regains hit points equal to the necrotic damage dealt.
Blood Breath (Recharge 5–6). The dragon exhales volatile, blood-red energy in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 21 (6d6) necrotic damage, and the dragon regains hit points equal to half the necrotic damage dealt. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage and the dragon doesn’t regain hit points from that creature.
A creature that fails the saving throw has its blood destabilized until the end of its next turn. The next time it takes damage before then, it takes an extra 5 (1d10) necrotic damage.
Predatory Charm (1/Day). The dragon targets one creature it can see within 30 feet. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or be charmed until the end of the dragon’s next turn. While charmed in this way, the creature has disadvantage on attack rolls against the dragon and can’t take reactions.
Description
Fresh from the egg yet already unsettling, a blood dragon wyrmling is a lithe, sinewy creature whose scales seem almost too thin—like a membrane stretched over something pulsing beneath. Its coloration ranges from deep crimson to dark maroon, with faint, vein-like patterns that subtly shift as if something is flowing just under the surface.
Its eyes glow with a wet, luminous sheen, reflecting light like liquid rather than glass. When it breathes, a faint mist tinged with red escapes its jaws, carrying a metallic scent unmistakably reminiscent of fresh blood.
Unlike other wyrmlings, its movements are not clumsy or curious—they are watchful and deliberate. It tilts its head when observing prey, studying not just motion, but weakness. When it strikes, it does so with unnerving precision, instinctively targeting the wounded.
At the center of its chest and along its throat, faint rhythmic pulses can sometimes be seen—like a second heartbeat—growing more pronounced when it feeds or prepares to unleash its breath.
🧠 Nature & Behavior
Blood dragon wyrmlings are born with a predatory instinct that goes beyond hunger. They are drawn not simply to life, but to vitality in flux—the moment when strength falters and life begins to slip.
They prefer:
- wounded creatures
- ongoing battles
- environments where blood has already been spilled
Rather than charging headlong into a fight, a blood wyrmling often:
- circles from a distance
- waits for injuries to occur
- then descends suddenly to exploit weakness
This makes them particularly dangerous in already chaotic encounters—they are opportunists, not initiators.
🩸 The Nature of Their “Blood”
Despite their name, blood dragons are not undead, nor are they true parasites in the traditional sense. Instead, they possess a strange biological and magical adaptation:
They can sense, agitate, and consume the life force carried within blood
When a blood dragon feeds, it doesn’t simply tear flesh—it draws out vitality, accelerating the natural breakdown of the body’s strength and redirecting it into itself.
Their breath weapon reflects this:
- not fire or acid, but a destabilizing wave that causes the body to turn against itself
- rupturing energy pathways, weakening creatures from within
🧬 Origins
Scholars and hunters argue endlessly about where blood dragons come from.
Some leading theories include:
🔮 Arcane Mutation
A draconic lineage warped by ancient blood magic, possibly tied to long-forgotten rituals meant to create perfect predators.
⚔️ War-Born Evolution
Dragons that adapted over generations to battlefields saturated with death, evolving to feed on the aftermath of conflict.
🌑 Cursed Broodline
A rare draconic bloodline touched by a primordial force that governs life and decay—not undeath, but the fragile boundary between vitality and collapse.
🧩 Behavior with Others
Blood dragon wyrmlings are:
- not social, even among their own kind
- territorial, but more interested in feeding zones than lairs
- capable of basic cunning, especially when stalking prey
They rarely hoard treasure in the traditional sense. Instead, they are drawn to:
- places of repeated violence
- hunting grounds with consistent prey
- areas where creatures frequently fight each other
To a blood wyrmling, a battlefield is more valuable than gold.
☠️ Rumors & Hooks
- Wounded soldiers report being followed for days by something waiting for them to weaken
- Entire skirmishes have been picked clean overnight, with no sign of scavengers—only faint crimson residue
- Some claim blood dragons can smell fear through blood itself, tracking prey even without sight
- A few arcane scholars believe their abilities could be harnessed… if one could survive close enough to study them
