Traits

Hollow Log Skulker. The boggart can move through the space of creatures Medium or larger and can occupy another creature’s space without penalty. While in dim light or darkness, the boggart can Hide as a bonus action.

Loathsome Escape. When the boggart takes damage, it can teleport up to 20 feet to an unoccupied space it can see, carrying one Tiny object with it. After teleporting, it immediately takes the Hide action.

Needleback Hide. When a creature hits the boggart with an unarmed strike, grapples it, or starts its turn grappling it, that creature takes 1d4 piercing damage and 1d4 poison damage.

Court Whisperer. The boggart constantly mutters stolen words and secrets. Creatures within 15 feet have disadvantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing unless immune to being frightened.

Malicious Mimicry. The boggart can perfectly imitate a voice it has heard. A creature hearing the imitation must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom (Insight) check to realize the voice is fake.

Actions

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target.4 (1d4+2) piercing damage plus 3 (1d6)(1d4 + 3) slashing damage plus 3 (1d6) psychic damage.

Pilfer Trinket Recharge 5-6. The boggart teleports up to 15 feet to a creature carrying a visible object. The target must succeed on a DC 13 Dexterity saving throw or the boggart steals one Tiny object it can carry (ring, wand focus, potion, component pouch item, key, etc.) and teleports up to 20 feet away.

Bonus Actions

Scuttle Through Shadows. The boggart moves up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks if it begins and ends this movement in dim light or darkness.

Reactions

Mocking Chorus. When a creature within 30 feet fails an attack roll, ability check, or saving throw, the boggart releases shrieking laughter. The creature must succeed on a DC 12 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened of the boggart until the end of its next turn.

Description

A boggart of the Hollow Court resembles a twisted fusion of starved goblin, bat, and rotting woodland spirit. Its oversized head is crowned with long, ragged ears and thorn-like protrusions, while enormous reflective eyes gleam with unsettling intelligence in even the faintest light. The creature’s body is skeletal and root-thin, its limbs ending in hooked claws like sharpened splinters. Wisps of shadow and dust trail from its movements as though it never fully exists in the same place twice.

Its skin resembles aged bark stretched over brittle bone, cracked and ridged like ancient timber hollowed by insects and rot. When still, a boggart can easily be mistaken for a knot in wood, a dangling clump of roots, or some malformed woodland growth. They favor high perches, hollow logs, rafters, and narrow crevices where they can watch unseen.

Boggarts rarely speak directly at first. Instead, they whisper in stolen voices, mimic laughter heard moments earlier, or repeat private fears in mocking tones. Their presence is often preceded by missing trinkets, extinguished lights, scratching sounds inside walls, or the sensation of being silently watched from the dark.

In the Court of the Queen of Air and Darkness, these creatures serve as malicious attendants and spies, delighting in humiliation, confusion, and emotional discomfort more than outright violence.
