Avatar of the Celestial Sea. Aetherion ignores difficult terrain caused by water, clouds, magical storms, and planar distortions. Hostile creatures within 30 feet of Aetherion treat the area as difficult terrain as celestial currents distort movement around it.
Beast of Change. Aetherion is immune to spells and effects that would alter its form against its will, including polymorph.
Legendary Resistance (4/Day). If Aetherion fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Radiant Wake. When Aetherion moves at least 30 feet, creatures of its choice within 10 feet of the spaces it moved through take 18 (4d8) radiant damage.
Unusual Nature. Aetherion doesn’t require food, drink, sleep, or air.
Multiattack. Aetherion makes one Bite attack and one Constrict attack.
Bite. Melee Attack Roll: +18 to hit, reach 20 ft. Hit: 27 (3d10 + 11) piercing damage plus 22 (4d10) radiant damage.
Constrict. Melee Attack Roll: +18 to hit, reach 15 ft., one Huge or smaller creature. Hit: 25 (3d8 + 11) bludgeoning damage plus 18 (4d8) force damage, and the target has the Grappled condition (escape DC 24). Until the grapple ends, the target has the Restrained condition.
Celestial Current Breath (Recharge 5–6). Aetherion exhales a torrent of radiant astral plasma in a 300-foot-long, 15-foot-wide line. Each creature in the line must make a DC 25 Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, a creature takes 88 (16d10) radiant damage plus 44 (8d10) force damage. On a successful save, the creature takes half as much damage. Good-aligned creatures instead regain hit points equal to half the damage rolled and gain advantage on saving throws until the end of their next turn.
Swallow. Aetherion makes one Bite attack against a Huge or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. While swallowed, the creature has the Blinded and Restrained conditions and has total cover against attacks and effects outside Aetherion. A swallowed creature takes 35 (10d6) radiant damage at the start of each of Aetherion’s turns. If Aetherion takes 40 damage or more on a single turn from a creature inside it, Aetherion must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or regurgitate all swallowed creatures, which fall prone within 20 feet of Aetherion.
Celestial Shapechange. Aetherion magically transforms into any Medium or Small Humanoid or Beast while retaining its game statistics except for its size. The transformation ends if Aetherion is reduced to 0 hit points or ends it as a bonus action.
Astral Surge. Aetherion moves up to half its swim or fly speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
Guardian’s Interception. When a creature Aetherion can see within 60 feet takes damage, Aetherion reduces that damage by 20 (4d8 + 2).
Aetherion can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature’s turn. Aetherion regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Attack. Aetherion makes one Bite attack.
Astral Movement. Aetherion uses Astral Surge.
Celestial Pulse (Costs 2 Actions). Aetherion releases radiant energy. Each hostile creature within 20 feet must succeed on a DC 25 Constitution saving throw or take 18 (4d8) radiant damage and have the Blinded condition until the end of its next turn.
Tide of Judgment (Costs 3 Actions). Aetherion summons a crushing celestial current in a 40-foot-radius sphere centered on a point it can see within 120 feet. Each hostile creature in the area must succeed on a DC 25 Strength saving throw or take 36 (8d8) force damage and be pulled up to 30 feet toward the center of the sphere.
Description
Aetherion is a colossal celestial leviathan whose body resembles an endless fusion of sea serpent, dragon, and living starlight.
Its immense form glides through sky, sea, and astral void with impossible grace despite its size. Vast scales shimmer with iridescent hues of silver, pale gold, sapphire, and pearl, each one reflecting entire constellations across their surface as though fragments of the night sky were trapped beneath crystal.
Along its spine drift luminous fins and radiant tendrils resembling flowing celestial currents. These appendages move like water suspended in zero gravity, leaving trails of glowing mist and shimmering astral particles behind the creature wherever it travels.
Aetherion’s eyes burn with soft white-gold light filled not with wrath, but with ancient intelligence and immeasurable calm.
When it speaks telepathically, its voice resembles:
- distant whale song
- crashing tides
- wind through clouds
- and stars humming across the heavens
Around Aetherion, reality subtly shifts:
- water rises toward it unnaturally
- storms calm in its presence
- clouds spiral gently around its body
- moonlight intensifies
- celestial reflections appear even in still puddles
Its breath weapon resembles a river of living starlight:
a radiant celestial current capable of annihilating fiends while simultaneously healing the righteous.
Despite its terrifying power, Aetherion radiates serenity rather than menace.
To many mortals, witnessing it feels less like seeing a monster and more like witnessing a force of divine nature.
🌊 The Celestial Current
According to ancient planar myth, before mortal oceans existed there was another sea:
The Celestial Current
An endless astral ocean flowing between planes, stars, souls, dreams, and divine realms.
It is said this cosmic sea carries:
- memories of the dead
- fragments of creation
- divine magic
- unborn stars
- and the currents of fate itself
Aetherion was born within those sacred waters long before most gods shaped mortal worlds.
Some legends claim it emerged from the very first collision between moonlight and ocean tides at the dawn of creation.
Others believe:
Aetherion is not truly alive in the mortal sense at all—
but rather a living manifestation of the Celestial Current itself.
🌌 Warden of the Divine Tides
Aetherion serves as guardian of:
- celestial pathways
- sacred seas
- astral migration routes
- divine currents between worlds
- and hidden planar gates buried beneath oceans
It is especially hostile toward creatures that corrupt natural balance between realms:
- aboleths
- elder evils
- voidspawn
- demon fleets
- necromantic sea cults
- cosmic parasites
Even gods of storms and oceans treat Aetherion with immense respect.
Unlike many celestial beings, Aetherion is not aligned with law through rigid doctrine.
Its lawfulness resembles:
- the inevitability of tides
- the orbit of stars
- the eternal rhythm of cosmic motion
🌊 Relationship with Mortals
Aetherion rarely interferes directly in mortal affairs.
When it does appear, it is usually during:
- world-altering storms
- planar catastrophes
- celestial convergences
- massive naval wars
- or cosmic disturbances beneath the sea
Sailors and coastal civilizations worship it under many names:
- Star Serpent
- Tidefather
- Moonwake Leviathan
- Keeper of the Silver Deep
- The Radiant Current
Entire island cultures paint its image across temple walls despite never having truly seen it.
Merfolk and dragon turtles often consider it sacred.
Bronze and silver dragons sometimes seek audiences with Aetherion to gain wisdom regarding cosmic balance and ancient history.
🌌 Celestial Shapechanging
Unlike deceptive shapeshifters, Aetherion uses its smaller forms primarily to:
- observe mortal civilizations
- travel unnoticed
- guide lost souls
- protect vulnerable settlements
- or study changing worlds
It commonly takes forms resembling:
- wandering monks
- humble sailors
- silver-haired travelers
- children standing near shorelines
- or strange draconic hermits
In these forms, its eyes still faintly reflect stars and moving tides.
Those who encounter it unknowingly often report feeling:
- unusually calm
- emotionally understood
- or protected from unseen danger
🌊 Ecology & Behavior
Aetherion does not hunt like ordinary creatures.
It feeds directly upon:
- celestial energy
- astral currents
- moonlight reflected on water
- divine resonance
- and planar flow itself
When traversing mortal oceans, entire ecosystems react peacefully to its presence:
- whales follow it
- storms part around it
- sea monsters flee
- bioluminescent life gathers nearby
Its passage across oceans sometimes creates:
- temporary glowing tides
- healing waters
- celestial whirlpools
- or brief openings to the Astral Sea
These locations often become holy sites afterward.
⚔️ The Enemy of Deep Corruption
Aetherion’s greatest enemies are creatures that violate cosmic flow and spiritual balance.
It especially despises:
- aboleths enslaving minds
- undead leviathans
- Far Realm sea entities
- abyssal krakens
- soul-consuming storms
- and beings that trap spirits after death
Some myths claim entire underwater civilizations survived extinction only because Aetherion intervened from the Celestial Current.
Its wrath against corrupted beings is legendary.
Normally serene,
Aetherion becomes terrifying when enraged:
a living cosmic storm swallowing fleets beneath radiant tidal waves.
🌌 Ancient Prophecy
Several planar religions contain a recurring prophecy:
“When the stars drown and the seas burn black, the Warden shall rise from the Celestial Current to carry the last light across the dying tides.”
What exactly this means remains unknown.
Many fear it foretells:
- a planar collapse
- the death of gods
- or the ending of creation itself.
