Traits

Spellplague Infusion. The Ashborn Revenant is suffused with unstable Spellplague Energy. When it takes damage from a spell, the damage dealt is reduced by 10 (minimum 0), and the spellcaster must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or suffer one level of exhaustion.

Arcane Hunger. The revenant has advantage on attack rolls against any creature that cast a spell within the last minute.

Ashen Reconstitution. If the revenant is reduced to 0 hit points but not destroyed, it collapses as a pile of ash that reforms at the start of its next turn with 1 hit point. This trait cant function while the revenant is in an area of consecrated ground or under the effects of a hollow spell.

Magic Silence Aura. The area within 10 feet of the revenant is suffused with anti-magic static. Creatures of its choice in the area have disadvantage on savings throws, to cast spells, and cant regain spell slots. This effect ends if the revenant is destroyed.

Actions

Multiattack. The Ashborn Revenant makes two melee attacks.

Ashen Blade. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft, one creature. Hit: 9 (1d8 + 5) slashing damage plus 7 (2d6) necrotic damage.

Spellrending Grasp. Melee Spell Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft, one creature. Hit: 13 (2d8 +4) force damage. If the target is concentrating on a spell, it must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or lose its concentration.

Arcane Drain (Recharge 5-6). The revenant reaches out with its spell-starved essence. Each creature within 15 feet that has at least one spell slot must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or have the highest-level spell slot expended. On a success, the creatures takes half as much psychic damage (10 or (3d6)). The revenant regains hit points equal to the total levels of spell slots expended by this ability.

Reactions

Arcane Retaliation. When the revenant is hit by a spell attack, it can use its reaction to force the attacker to make a DC 15 Intelligence saving throw. On a failure, the creature takes 9 (2d8) force damage and the spell's effects are suppressed until the end of the revenants next turn.

Legendary Actions

The Ashborn Revenant can take 2 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creatures turn. The revenant regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Ashen Step. The revenant teleports up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space it can see. This movement doesnt provoke opportunity attacks.

Withering Glare. One creature the revenant can see within 30 feet must succeed on a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw or be frightened of the revenant until the end of its next turn.

Spell Eruption (Costs 2 Actions). The revenant unleashes a burst of raw Spellplague energy. Each creature within 20 feet must make a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw, taking 14 (4d6) force damage and 7 (2d6) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Description

Born in the moment magic died.

When the Spellplague tore the Weave and buried That in ash, not all the dead were granted rest. Some were bound to the remnants of their unfinished will, their souls scorched and fused with raw Spellplague residue.

These are Ashborn Revenants --- hollow echoes of Thayan lives, twisted into weapons of memory, rage, and arcane starvation. They hunger not for flesh, but for spellcraft. Magic is the only thing that quiets the endless scream of their unmaking.

The Ashborn Revenants were once Thayan soldiers, acolytes, and battlemages who died during rituals that were interrupted by the Spellplague. Their spirits were not free to pass on. Instead, they were stripped of identity and purpose, remade as guardians of Thay's buried secrets. They do not serve Szass Tam out of loyalty --- only obsession. To them, magic is not a tool, but a memory of what they were, and what they lost.

Destroying an Ashborn Revenant releases that memory in a violent eruption of Spellplague energy.
