Description

The badger-beaver is the magically created hybrid of a dire badger and dire beaver, the creature retains the skull structure, claws, and frequent pattern of the badger (European Badger) but keeps the plump physique, the characteristic teeth, and tail of a beaver. The large teeth are smaller than the original dire beavers but gain the sharp teeth and powerful jaw of the badger. These animals normally keep to themselves as long as their dens or individuals are unthreatened. But when they fight they are a fierce and powerful opponent. Unlike the dire & normal badger who takes difficulty from being attack from behind, the powerful tail of the beaver gives a simple but effective line of defense. The characteristic black stripes of the badger remain but the white sections are replaced with the brown fur of beaver.

Lair and Lair Actions

Badger-beaver burrows are usually located in lakes or ponds, the entrance on the surface is home to the workers similar to an average beaver although much larger, big enough for a tall Dwarf to stand up in. Normally in the center is a hole burrowing deep below into the ground under the lake or pond. This burrow houses the young and food, the entrance is usually relatively well hidden, and can be found if someone has enough time. Frequently a large damn is built a river to forcefully create a pond or lake, these are made of trees, sticks, mud, and rocks. They are impressively sturdy but without frequent care tend to deteriorate.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 15 (losing initiative ties), the badger-beaver takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the badger-beaver can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Only if a badger-beaver is close to the entrance, it can seal the entrance to the surface nest. This seal isn't any sturdier than the primary structure.
  • They can quickly enter the burrow and escape down it with semi-ease, this does provoke an attack of opportunity, but with a disadvantage as long as the attacker is unaware of the burrow entrances location.
