Traits

Sure-Footed. The horse has advantage on Strength and Dexterity saving throws made against effects that would knock it prone.

Between-Step Awareness. The horse has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made to detect planar thinness, fey crossings, or unstable roads within 30 feet.

Unbound Movement. Nonmagical difficult terrain caused by mud, uneven ground, undergrowth, or light obstruction doesn't cost the horse extra movement. (Gained at Befriended Bond Rank)

Hard-Lived. The horse has advantage on saving throws against exhaustion caused by travel, harsh conditions, or lack of proper care. (Gained at Trusted Bond Rank)

Personality Traits

+ Powerful Build. Increase carrying capacity by 20%.

+ Strong Willed. Advantage on saving throws against Charm effects.

- Stubborn. Once per day, the horse may refuse a command unless rider succeeds on Animal Handling check.

Actions

Multiattack. The horse makes two attacks: one with its hooves and one with its bite.

Hooves. Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (1d6+2) bludgeoning damage.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +2 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: (1d4+2) piercing damage.

Bonus Actions

Wanderstep (1/Short or Long Rest). When the horse fails a check or saving throw made to navigate, track, or avoid an environmental hazard, it can reroll the check. If the reroll succeeds, the horse arrives at a safe location, though not necessarily the intended destination. (Gained at Devoted Bond Rank)

  • Once per short rest, when the rider takes damage while mounted, the horse may use its reaction to move up to half its speed without provoking opportunity attacks.
  • Horse and rider cannot be surprised while mounted if either notices the threat.
  • Horse gains temporary hit points equal to rider’s proficiency bonus after each long rest.
  • Rider has advantage on any check made to calm or direct the horse in combat.

Description

Mirelost Drifter. A rangy, weatherworn horse often found wandering the edges of bog roads, forgotten trails, and places where paths dissolve into mist, the Mirelost Drifter carries the look of something that has traveled farther than it should have. Independent, wary, and quietly perceptive, it resists control but proves invaluable to riders willing to listen. Bonds slowly, but once formed, it rarely abandons its chosen companion. Some Mirelost Drifters bear old tack marks… from saddles no one remembers placing. (Ability Score Increases: +2 WIS, +1 CON. Class Affinities: Trailblazer, Windrunner, Shadowstep.)

Stray Road Archetype. These horses have been lost between places. They may lead a rider somewhere important… or somewhere they cannot easily return from. They are skittish, unpredictable, know hidden paths instinctively, are harder to bond with, but incredibly perceptive.

Windrunner Class. Fast, clever, evasive horses with sharp instincts. (Primary Ability: DEX. Armor Training: Light Barding.)
