When the Abyss Crawler reduces a Medium or Large creature to 0 hit points and any part of the Abyss Crawler is within 10ft of the creature, it is consumed. When consuming a creature, the Abyss Crawler grows 5d10ft longer, and gains 3d10 maximum hit points. If the Abyss Crawler consumes a Huge or Gargantuan Creature, it gains 50 + 5d10 feet of length and 50 + 3d10 maximum hit points. Lair and Lair Actions

An Abyss Crawler's Lair

The lair of an Abyss Crawler usually spans up to 10 miles, often being a series of chasms or ravines.

The areas around lairs are usually preceded by black fog, paranoia, and a sense of dread.

An Abyss Crawler encountered in its lair has a challenge rating of 22.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the Abyss Crawler can take a lair action to cause one of the following magical effects; the Abyss Crawler can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • A creature of the Abyss Crawler's choice within 200ft of it is blinded until the end of its next turn.
  • Ghostly arms reach out from under a creature of the Abyss Crawler's choice that is within 150ft of the Abyss Crawler. The arms wrap around the creature and attempt to bring it under the earth. The creature must succeed a DC16 Strength saving throw or be restrained until the next initiative count of 20. Creatures that are bigger than the Abyss Crawler automatically succeed this saving throw. Flying creatures hit by this effect are brought downwards 50ft, and the effect automatically ends if they do not reach the ground.
  • Ghostly apparitions of the Abyss Crawler emerge from the fog and charge at a creature of the Abyss Crawler's choice. The creature must succeed a DC15 Wisdom saving throw, Taking 40 (9d8) Psychic damage on a failed save or half as much on a success.

Regional Effects

The region containing an Abyss Crawler's lair includes the following effects:

  • Any creature that enters within a mile of the Abyss Crawler's lair feels like they're being watched.
  • Any creature within a mile of the Abyss Crawler's lair has their sight reduced to 20ft and all other senses halved in distance.
  • The Abyss Crawler knows the general direction of any creature in its lair, but loses this sense when within 200ft of the creature.

If the Abyss Crawler dies, these effects fade over the course of 3d8 days.
