Drain. If the alpha soul hound hits with its bite attack it can attempt to drain the target. Target must succeed Constitution save DC 18 or take 2d8 necrotic damage. The alpha soul hound heals by half this value. If a creature is brought to 0 or fewer hp from this ability it automatically fails their death saves and the soul hound heals an additional 3d8 hp.
Death Spreader. Humanoids killed by drain rise as husks 1d4 hours later.
Grapple. The alpha soul hound can immediately attempt to grapple creatures struck by its tongue. Any creature grappled by the tongue takes the effect of drain at the start of its turn.
Wounded Fury. While it has 20 hit points or fewer, the alpha soul hound has advantage on attack rolls. In addition, it deals an extra 7 (2d6) damage to any target it hits with a melee attack.
Multiattack. The alpha soul hound makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.
Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 23 (3d10 + 7) piercing damage.
Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 25 (4d8 + 7) slashing damage.
Tongue. Melee Weapon Attack: +12 to hit, reach 30 ft., one target. Hit: 29 (4d10 + 7) slashing damage.
The alpha soul hound can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The alpha regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Bite Attack. The alpha soul hound makes a Bite attack.
Tongue Attack. The alpha soul hound makes a Tongue attack.
Howl (Recharge 1d4). The alpha soul hound lets out a roar in a 15ft radius. Each creature in that area must succeed a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or be stunned for 1 round. The alpha and other soul hounds are not affected by this.
Description
Soul hounds are quadrupeds that look like a cross between a dog and a bear. Most have darker shaggy fur though there are some with lighter grey coloration. There are even rare offshoots that are hairless or have scales.
Pack Hunters
Soul hounds are pack animals. A pack generally consists of three to six soul hounds and a single alpha. They have been known to briefly hunt in larger numbers where up to ten pack move together but these are rare occurrences.
Spirit Eaters
Soul hounds can survive on any living organism like normal predators. But what gives them true substance is the life force of other creatures, stolen while the creature is still alive or at the moment of death.
Alpha
The alpha soul hound is significantly larger than normal soul hounds and is easy to spot out of the group. There is only ever one alpha in a pack at a time, though if multiple packs are working together there will be an alpha from each pack.
