Traits

Keen Smell. The Azure Maw has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Arcane Predator. The Azure Maw can sense the presence of active magic and magical creatures within 30 feet of it. This sense does not reveal the exact nature of the magic.

Azure Overload. The first time the Azure Maw is reduced to 11 hit points or fewer, the unstable magic stored within its Azure Gland erupts. Each creature within 5 feet of the Azure Maw must succeed on a DC 11 Dexterity saving throw or be pushed up to 10 feet away. This movement does not provoke opportunity attacks.

After Azure Overload activates, faint blue energy constantly escapes from cracks across the Azure Maw’s body.

Unstable Gland. If the Azure Maw is killed, its Azure Gland remains intact unless specifically destroyed. A creature can remove the gland from the defeated Azure Maw with a successful DC 10 Wisdom (Medicine) or Intelligence (Nature) check.

Actions

Azure Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d6 + 2) piercing damage.

Arcane Pounce (Recharge 5–6). The Azure Maw leaps up to 15 feet toward a creature it can see without provoking opportunity attacks from the target. It then makes one Azure Bite attack against that creature. On a hit, the target must succeed on a DC 11 Strength saving throw or be pushed 5 feet backward.

Bonus Actions

Flicker Step (Recharge 5–6). The Azure Maw briefly dissolves into flickering blue energy and teleports up to 15 feet to an unoccupied space it can see.

If Azure Overload has activated, Flicker Step instead has a range of 20 feet.

Reactions

Arcane Reflex (1/Day). When the Azure Maw is hit by an attack, it can use its reaction to move up to 10 feet without provoking opportunity attacks. The attack still deals damage normally.

This is another way of making the creature feel unusually fast without simply increasing its AC.

Description

Azure Maws are predatory monstrosities created through prolonged exposure to concentrated magical energy. They are powerful, territorial hunters recognizable by the brilliant blue light visible beneath portions of their skin and the glowing fluid that occasionally escapes from their mouths.

At the center of an Azure Maw’s body is an enlarged organ known as an Azure Gland. The gland absorbs and stores magical energy from the creature’s environment, allowing an Azure Maw to survive by consuming magically infused plants, creatures, and other sources of arcane energy. Mature glands are highly valuable ingredients for potions and magical research.

Azure Maws are aggressive but intelligent hunters. Rather than remaining beside a single opponent, they rapidly reposition around the battlefield, pouncing upon vulnerable prey before retreating and attacking from another direction. When severely injured, the magical energy contained within their gland becomes unstable and erupts outward.

Their presence can often be identified before the creature itself is seen. Trees may be stripped of Azure Sap, magically infused plants disappear, and faint blue markings can be found along the Azure Maw’s territory.
