Traits

Keen Sight. The bearowl has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

Silent Flight. The bearowl has advantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks made to be undetected due to noise while flying.

Neck Rotation. The bearowl can turn its head nearly 180 degrees without turning its body.

Actions

Multiattack. The bearowl makes two attacks,. It can make only one Bite, one Claw, and up to two Wingblade attacks this turn.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 4) slashing damage.

Wingbeat. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature. Hit: 9 (1d10 + 4) bludgeoning damage. The bearowl chooses one of the following effects:

  • Push. The target must succeed on a DC 12 Strength saving throw or be pushed up to 10 feet away from the bearowl.
  • Hop. The bearowl moves up to 10 feet directly away from the target, ending in an unoccupied space, without provoking opportunity attacks.

Wingblade. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d8 + 4) slashing damage. Each wing conceals a long, retractable claw beneath its feathers. The claws are normally hidden and do not alter the bearowl's appearance as an owl-like creature.

Changes in Bold:

Aerial Grapple: When making a Claw attack while flying, on a hit the Bearowl may attempt a grapple. The bearowl makes a Dexterity (Stealth) check (with advantage while flying), contested by the target's passive Perception. If the bearowl wins, the target cannot contest the grapple and is grappled automatically. Otherwise, the target contests the grapple normally. While grappling a creature with its claws, the bearowl cannot make another Claw attack against other creatures. The bearowl can carry a grappled creature up to size Medium without reducing its Flying speed, and cannot fly at all while grappling a Huge creature.

Bearowl Hug. The bearowl attempts to grapple a creature within 5 feet of it. The target can resist the grapple as normal, with a Strength (Athletics) or Dexterity (Acrobatics) check contested by a Strength check made by the Bearowl. If the target is grappled, it must then succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or become restrained. A creature restrained in this way remains restrained until the bearowl chooses to release itor the grappled creature can succeed on a DC 16 Strength save.

While a creature is restrained by the Bearowl Hug, the bearowl automatically deals 7 (1d6 + 4) bludgeoning damage and 7 (2d6) piercing damage to the creature at the start of each of the bearowl's turns as it crushes and bites its victim. The bearowl can have only one creature restrained by Bearowl Hug at a time.

Description

A consummate ambush predator, the Bearowl is deadly from the air. It has the bearing and flight characteristics of an owl combined with the ferocity and strength of a bear.

Its appearance is that of an upright bear, though balanced on two legs like an owl, with great owl-like wings. Its head and shoulders specifically are those of a bear. If an Owlbear is an owl-themed bear, the bearowl is a bear-themed owl.

It prefers to hunt patiently, waiting in an elevated position, then swooping down to grab its prey: generally anything medium-sized or smaller, including mountain goats, deer, sheep, and occasionally people. Once it has prey in its grasp, it typically returns to its nest (often in an isolated and elevated location, but some bearowls nest on the ground). If a bearowl thinks the grappled prey is too large to be easily subdued, they have been known to drop creatures from a height to make them compliant.
