Traits

Keen Smell. Bessie has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Mithral Barding. Bessie wears specially fitted mithral chain mail barding. The barding doesn't impose disadvantage on Dexterity (Stealth) checks, and it has no Strength requirement.

Living Couch. Bessie is remarkably comfortable to sit, lean, or lie against. When she settles down, one Medium creature or up to two Small creatures can comfortably use her as a couch, pillow, bed, or blanket. Bessie instinctively shifts her considerable bulk to support whoever is resting with her, allowing them to lean against her, lie across her, curl into her side, or nestle beneath her without being crushed or displaced. She is particularly fond of curling around children and other members of her family, covering them with her warmth while they sleep.

Bessie is perfectly content to remain in this position for hours and has been known to continue serving as furniture long after the creature using her has fallen asleep. Moving Bessie once she has decided someone requires additional rest generally requires negotiation, bribery, or jerky.

Actions

Multiattack. Bessie makes two attacks: one with its bite and one with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 4 (1d6 + 1) piercing damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +3 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (2d4 + 1) slashing damage.

Bonus Actions

Burrowing Scramble. Bessie moves up to half its Burrow Speed without provoking Opportunity Attacks. During this movement, it can burrow only through nonmagical, unworked earth, sand, or similar material.

Blanket Mode. As a Bonus Action, Bessie can move into the space of one willing Small or Medium creature within 5 feet of her that is Prone, Frightened, Incapacitated, sleeping, or otherwise allowing Bessie to cover it. Bessie sprawls over or curls around the creature, placing herself between it and danger.

While Blanket Mode is active, the following effects apply:

  • The protected creature has Three-Quarters Cover against attacks and effects originating outside Bessie's space.
  • The protected creature has Advantage on saving throws made to avoid or end the Frightened condition.
  • Bessie's Speed becomes 0, and she willingly shares the protected creature's space.
  • Bessie can still make Bite attacks, use Protective Snap, and use Mithral Deflection.
  • If an attack against the protected creature misses because of the AC bonus granted by this cover, the attack instead targets Bessie using the same attack roll. If that roll equals or exceeds Bessie's AC, Bessie is hit.
  • Blanket Mode ends if Bessie chooses to end it (no action required), Bessie becomes Incapacitated, or if Bessie is forcibly moved out of the creature's space.
Reactions

Mithral Deflection. When Bessie is hit by an attack while wearing its mithral barding, it gains a +2 bonus to AC against that attack, potentially causing the attack to miss.

Protective Snap. When a melee attack hits a creature the badger can see within 5 feet of it, Bessie can make one Bite attack against the attacker.

Description

Bessie is an unusually large, intelligent, and exceptionally self-assured honey badger whose loyalty to her chosen family is matched only by her conviction that she is their queen. She is stubborn, observant, affectionate, remarkably socially perceptive, and entirely comfortable inserting herself into whatever activity she believes requires royal supervision. Once Bessie accepts a creature as part of her family, she treats that bond seriously, remaining nearby, supervising children and animals, inspecting newcomers, and making certain everyone is where she believes they belong.

Bessie possesses a particular fondness for comfort, attention, brushing, honeyed bread, and what she considers sacred jerky. She frequently serves as an exceptionally warm couch, cushion, pillow, or blanket for members of her family and may remain in place long after they intended to get up. She carries herself with unmistakable dignity, often expecting recognition of her status and responding to perceived injustices with huffy silence, pointed staring, or demands for appropriate compensation.

Despite her regal airs, Bessie is deeply nurturing. She instinctively watches over children, injured companions, frightened animals, and anyone she believes requires rest or supervision. She is commonly seen wearing a tiara, pink ribbon, and specially fitted mithral chain mail barding, presenting the improbable but entirely accurate appearance of a pampered royal companion who is nevertheless still very much a badger.

Bessie considers herself an important member of the family rather than a pet. Attempts to convince her otherwise are generally unsuccessful.
