Legendary Resistance (5/Day)

Description:
If the Baatorian Crystal Devourer fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead. Your original stat block gives it 5 Legendary Resistances per day.

Crystal Reflection

Description:
Direct damaging spells and magical energy attacks deal 0 damage to the Baatorian Crystal Devourer and are reflected toward their source.

The Devourer makes a Constitution saving throw against the caster's spell save DC.

On a successful save: The source takes the rolled damage of the same type.

On a failed save: The source takes twice the rolled damage of the same type.

Non-damaging control magic is not automatically reflected unless another immunity applies.

Targetable Body Parts

Description:
Specific parts of the Baatorian Crystal Devourer's body can be targeted separately. An attacker makes an attack against the body part's AC. Damage dealt reduces both the body part's hit points and the Devourer's main hit points. Excess damage does not transfer to another body part.

Sensory Crown

Description:
The Sensory Crown has AC 25 and 150 HP.

At 75 HP, the Devourer's tremorsense is reduced from 1,000 feet to 300 feet.

At 0 HP, its tremorsense is reduced to 60 feet.

Reflection Crystal Nodes

Description:
The Reflection Crystal Nodes have AC 25 and 150 HP.

At 75 HP, Crystal Reflection can no longer deal doubled reflected damage.

At 0 HP, the Devourer's Crystal Reflection trait shuts down completely.

Phase Two: Crystals Awaken

Description:
When the Baatorian Crystal Devourer is reduced to 575 HP or fewer, its crystals glow blood-red. Its burrow speed increases to 120 feet, Crystal Shard Barrage automatically recharges, and the creature becomes dramatically more aggressive.

Actions

Multiattack

The Baatorian Crystal Devourer makes five attacks: two Claw attacks, two Tentacle attacks, and either one Bite or one Crystal Tail attack.

Claw

Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 25 ft., one target.
Hit: 5d12 + 10 slashing damage plus 3d10 bludgeoning damage.

The target must succeed on a DC 22 Strength saving throw or become Grappled and Restrained by the claw. The Devourer has two claws available.

Crushing Claw

One creature Restrained by the Devourer's claw must make a DC 22 Strength saving throw.

Failed Save: 8d12 + 10 bludgeoning damage.
Successful Save: Half as much damage.

The creature remains Restrained after the attack.

Tentacle

Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 40 ft., one target.
Hit: 4d12 + 10 bludgeoning damage, and the target is Grappled (escape DC 22).

Bite

If the target is already Grappled by the Devourer, the target also takes 4d10 acid damage.

Crystal Tail

Melee Weapon Attack: +18 to hit, reach 50 ft., one target.
Hit: 5d12 + 10 bludgeoning damage plus 3d10 piercing damage.

The target must succeed on a DC 22 Strength saving throw or be thrown 40 feet and knocked Prone.

Burrowing Catastrophe

The Devourer violently erupts through the ground. Each creature in a 60-foot-radius area must make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw.

Failed Save: 8d10 bludgeoning damage plus 8d10 piercing damage, and the creature is launched 30 feet.

Successful Save: Half as much damage.

Successful Save: Half as much damage.

Seismic Slam

The Devourer strikes the ground with catastrophic force. Creatures in a 100-foot-radius area must make a DC 22 Strength saving throw. If in a cave, the party member affected will also take 4d10 piercing or bludgeoning damage from debris, even if they save

Failed Save: 8d10 bludgeoning damage; the creature is knocked Prone, and pushed 20 feet.

Successful Save: Half as much damage.

Legendary Actions

The Baatorian Crystal Devourer can take 5 Legendary Actions, choosing from the options below. Only one Legendary Action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The Devourer regains spent Legendary Actions at the start of its turn.

Detect

Cost: 1 Legendary Action

The Devourer locates creatures touching the ground within 1,000 feet of it.

Tentacle

Cost: 1 Legendary Action

The Devourer makes one Tentacle attack.

Burrow

Cost: 1 Legendary Action

The Devourer moves up to half its burrow speed without provoking opportunity attacks.

Normally this is 40 feet, since its burrow speed is 80 feet. During Phase Two, its burrow speed increases to 120 feet, making this movement 60 feet.

Crystal Sweep

Cost: 2 Legendary Actions

The Devourer sweeps its enormous crystal tail through a 30-foot cone. Each creature in the area must make a DC 22 Dexterity saving throw, taking 10d8 slashing/piercing damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Devour

Cost: 3 Legendary Actions

The Devourer makes a Bite attack against a creature it has grappled. The attack deals its normal Bite damage and an additional 6d10 acid damage.

Description

Baatorian Crystal Devourer. A colossal subterranean monstrosity native to the depths of Avernus, the Baatorian Crystal Devourer resembles a living cavern of armored flesh and enormous infernal crystals. It hunts primarily through vibration, sensing creatures through the ground with extraordinary tremorsense rather than relying on sight. Its massive claws and tentacles seize prey before crushing or devouring them, while its crystalline armor can reflect magical energy back toward its source. The creature acts primarily on instinct, displaying little conventional intelligence and no known language. Its enormous crystal growths are functional organs that can be individually damaged or destroyed, progressively weakening the creature. When severely wounded, its crystals awaken with blood-red energy and the Devourer becomes faster and dramatically more aggressive.

Lair and Lair Actions

The Baatorian Crystal Devourer sleeps beneath an immense crystalline cavern, its colossal body buried so deeply beneath the stone that the cavern floor itself is part of the creature. Crystal formations protrude from the ground like natural mineral deposits, concealing the monstrosity below.

The Devourer senses the world primarily through vibrations in the surrounding stone. Mining, explosions, thunderous impacts, heavy machinery, running creatures, and attempts to extract its crystals can disturb its slumber and increase the cavern's Resonance.

At Resonance 6, the crystals throughout the cavern suddenly stop humming. A tremendous THUMP rolls through the stone, followed by a second. The Devourer is awakening.

A creature that succeeds on a DC 18 Wisdom (Perception) check realizes that the cavern floor is actually part of an enormous living creature and can immediately move up to half its speed before initiative is rolled.

When the Devourer awakens, the cavern floor erupts as its claws, tentacles, crystalline structures, and massive Soul Lance Crystal tear free from the surrounding rock.
