Description
The coastal city stat of Agrippa have to contend with threats from land and sea. Through painful experience, they’ve learned that typical hoplite formations aren’t as effective against raiders and pirates where loose, rocky ground makes tight formations difficult to form. Instead, the main soldiery of Agrippa are equipped as heavily armoured skirmishers clad in bronze scale mail and protected by round shields. They’re recognised by their open Corinthian style helmets with cyan plumes. What they lack in stealth, they make up for in recognising friend from foe where pitched armies use bronze armour almost exclusively.
Their primary weapons are bronze-tipped javelins. Each skirmisher has a leather quiver or case that can carry five at a time. Outside of a few veterans, the Agrippan’s recruit from the local populace and even then, they’re not deemed fit for full service until they can hit an obscured target with a javelin at 30 paces. A typical deployment takes place in rough terrain with dry rock formations. Cover and obscuring terrain is plentiful so engagements can be quick and bloody. To adapt to this, the skirmishers use short, heavy bladed falcatas capable of severing unprotected limbs. The idea is to end a fight as quickly as it starts. The few raiders that survive the battle might live long enough to be patched up for interrogation. On exceedingly rare cases, willing pirate informants have served their time, taken their punishment and become full citizens. Their input on the whereabouts of local pirate captains is vital to Agrippa’s continued survival.
