Traits

Hold Breath. The bog strider can hold its breath for 15 minutes.

Tremor Tap. Bog striders can send and receive messages by creating and sensing silent vibrations on the surface of any body of water they currently tread. The range of communication extends outward 120 feet to all other bog striders within line of effect on or under the water. Because the ripples created on the water prove omni-directional, bog striders can communicate with multiple targets at the same time. Only bog striders can understand this form of communication. This ability also grants the bog strider tremorsense in water at a range of 120 feet.

Water Sprint (Recharges after a Short or Long Rest). The bog strider can move up to 5 times its normal speed (250 feet) on water when making a charge or retreating from an enemy. Once it decides to increase its movement in this fashion, the effect lasts for up to 4 rounds, after which the bog strider gains one level of exhaustion.

Water Stride. The bog strider can tread upon rivers, lakes, and flooded swamplands or marshes as if under the effects of the water walk spell. It also gains an increased movement rate by using the surface tension and its multiple legs to propel itself across the water.

Actions

Multiattack. The bog strider makes two melee attacks: one with its bite and one with its claw or spear.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+2) piercing damage.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 6 (1d8+2) slashing damage.

Spear. Melee or Ranged Weapon Attack: +4 to hit, reach 5 ft. or ranged 20/60 ft., one target. Hit: 5 1d6+2 piercing damage, or 6 (1d8+2) piercing damage when used with two hands.

Description

BOG STRIDER
The insectile bog striders call themselves seshes, but they take no offense at those who use the more common vernacular to refer to them. They resemble upright water striders with four legs, two arms, and powerful mandibles. Bog striders can move about on water like most creatures move on solid ground, chasing down prey or fleeing from predators across the water. Bog striders stand 5 feet tall and weigh approximately 150 pounds. In sesh society, each individual is expected to serve equally in all efforts to ensure the community’s survival against the more aggressive creatures often found in or near their swampland homes. In addition, each member of the community is expected to develop a skill that contributes to the community’s prosperity, and by extension, the continued survival of the species. Traditionally, female bog striders are builders and artisans, while male bog striders are hunters and gatherers, but often such roles aren’t stratified by gender, as every member of a small community pitches in to help as they can.
