Description
Newly emerged from its obsidian-like shell, the hatchling’s scales are not yet the dull, pitted charcoal of an adult, but a glossy, iridescent black with subtle violet and dark green sheens. Its hide is soft and leathery, gradually hardening as it absorbs the acrid fumes of its native swamp. Its large, reptilian eyes glow like burning embers—a striking neon yellow or fiery orange—with slit pupils that adjust constantly to light. Tiny, ivory-white hornbuds poke through the brow, and short, translucent webbing stretches between its clawed digits. Spanning roughly three feet from snout to tail tip, the hatchling is lean and lithe, with long, disproportionate limbs and oversized wings that flop awkwardly until it learns to balance.
