Spellcasting. The Avatar's spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 23, +15 to hit with spell attacks). He has the following spells prepared:

Cantrips (at will): chill touch, mage hand, ray of frost
1st level (4 slots): shield, inflict wounds, hellish rebuke
2nd level (3 slots): darkness, hold person, ray of enfeeblement, silence
3rd level (3 slots): animate dead, counterspell, dispel magic, vampiric touch
4th level (3 slots): banishment, blight, phantasmal killer
5th level (4 slots): cone of cold, dominate person, cloudkill, telekinesis
6th level (3 slots): circle of death, disintegrate, create undead
7th level (4 slots): finger of death, plane shift, reverse gravity
8th level (3 slots): dominate monster, feeblemind
9th level (2 slots): time stop, meteor swarm

Legendary Resistance (5/Day): If Myrkul fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Limited Magic Immunity: Myrkul is immune to spells of 3rd level or lower, unless he wishes to be affected.

Mark of Death: Myrkul can mark a creature with death, a physical and magical mark of the unholy symbol of Myrkul on the creature's body and soul. A creature with a mark of death subtracts 1 from Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma saving throws for every number of marks the creature possesses. A creature can have a number of marks equal to 5 + its Constitution modifier. Up to two marks of death can be moved to an allied creature if both creatures are willing on their turn as a free action on the sending creature's turn.

Turn Resistance: Myrkul has advantage on saving throws against any effect that turns undead.

Regeneration: Myrkul regains 25 Hit Points at the start of his turn. If Myrkul takes radiant damage, this trait's healing is reduced to zero until the end of Myrkul's next turn.

Reaper of Souls. If a creature has maximum marks of death, and is within 15 ft. of Myrkul, the creature must make a DC 12 Constitution saving throw at the start of its turn. On a failed save, the creature's soul is extracted into the avatar form. The creature dies, and its soul can only be restored when the avatar form is destroyed, or nothing short of a wish spell.

Actions

Cleaving Cast. Myrkul uses his cleave and casts a spell of 5th level or lower.

Cleave. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 15 ft., 3 targets within 10 ft. of each other. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) slashing damage, 12 (2d6 + 5) cold damage, and 12 (2d6 + 5) necrotic damage. If the target is a creature, and the target takes damage from this attack, it gains a Mark of Death. This attack deals an extra 1d6 necrotic damage for every mark of death a target possesses.

Legendary Actions

Myrkul can take 5 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time, and only at the end of another creature's turn. Myrkul regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

Cleave (Costs 2 Actions). Myrkul uses his Cleave.

Cantrip. Myrkul casts a cantrip.

7th Level Spell Slot (Costs 3 Actions). Myrkul casts any prepared 7th level or below spell, consuming a 7th level spell slot upon casting.

Eyebite (Costs 2 Actions). Myrkul casts eyebite.

Drain Strength (Costs 3 Actions). Melee Weapon Attack: +9 to hit, reach 10 ft., one creature with atleast 5 marks of death. Hit: 14 (4d6) necrotic damage, and the target's Strength score is reduced by 1d4+2. The target dies if this reduces its Strength to 0. Otherwise, the reduction lasts until the target finishes a short or long rest, or nothing short of a greater restoration.

Move. Myrkul moves up to 20 ft.

Description

The Avatar form of the God of Death, Myrkul is roughly 20' from shoulder to shoulder, and stands roughly 80' tall. It takes the form of a colossal skeleton, cloaked in a wispy robe that falls into a black smoke. The form consists of a torso, shoulders, arms, and a head. The body below the torso falls into the thick black smoke. He wields a massive black scythe made of different bones, leaving a black trail as it moves. A contrasting blue-green glow can be seen within the smoke beneath, the physical representation of the recent souls that have been consumed into his form. He speaks in a high, shrill, ghastly voice, though never speaks with enough inflection to show concern.

Lair and Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Myrkul can take a lair action to cause one of the following magical effects; Myrkul can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:

Myrkul creates an antilife field with a 10 ft. radius around himself until initiative count 10. The field disables any healing for creatures other than Myrkul.

Myrkul calls forth the bodies of creatures that died in his lair. 1d6 + 2 Skeletons (Monster Manual, Page 272) rise from the ground and begin attacking any creatures within range that are hostile to Myrkul that he can see.

Myrkul raises, moves, and lowers the rocky formations within the lair to create a tactical advantage.

(Only after dropping below 1000 hit points, 1/day) Myrkul calls forth the Wall of the Faithless from under the ground. The wall breaks through the ground and rises. One round later, on initiative count 20, the wall will absorb the enemy creature with the most marks of death, killing the creature and taking its soul. This can be subverted by three successful actions to remove the wall from the surface. This can be done in many ways, using ability checks to do so. The DC for a successful skill is 20. The following abilities can be used to remove the wall from the surface:

  • Athletics
  • Acrobatics
  • Arcana
  • Religion
  • Insight
  • Medicine
  • Survival
  • Deception
  • Intimidation
  • Persuasion
