Description

Araumycos is the father of all fungi and spores, parent to the dark creations of the Underdark caverns.  Those who worship Zuggtmoy in part worship Araumycos as well. Many spawn such as the Dragon Fungus and Spore Spawn Myconid exist because Araumycos's thorough research on transformation spores.

Lair and Lair Actions

Araumycos lives in the lowest level of the Underdark, in large passage known as the Caves of Araumycos.  It is also thought to have a lair in the Slime Pits, though this theory is highly unlikely.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Aruamycos takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; Araumycos can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • If Araumycos can see any cave openings, it can cause water to overflow. Any creature within 20 feet of such an opening must succeed on a DC 15 Dexterity saving throw or be knocked prone and pushed up to 20 feet in a straight line away from the opening.
  • Noxious gas covers all creatures in a 60-foot radius sphere centered on a spot within the lair.  Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 19 Constitution saving throw or take 44 (8d10) poison damage. Creatures without a head or that don't need to breathe automatically succeed.
  • Araumycos spits out a cloud of poisonous gas.  Each creature in a 60-foot radius cone must succeed on a DC 17 Constitution saving throw or have disadvantage on all saving throws until the end of Araumycos's next turn.

Regional Effects

The region containing the legendary Araumycos's lair is full of fungi, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • Fungi and other plants thrive within half a mile of the lair.
  • Fungal spores drifting through the lair have the power to animate plants. Whenever a Medium or smaller plant dies within the lair, roll a d20.  On a 20, the plant rises up as if targeted by the animate plant spell. 3d8 hours later, the plant is destroyed.

If Araumycos dies, these effects fade over the course of 6d4 days.
