Traits

Keen Smell. The bear has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Hyper Speed. The bear moves at the speed of sound and then some. It takes an attack on any creature that has not moved the previous round of combat. The bear also takes an attack with its claws at the end of every turn that isn't its own. At a quarter health, the bear stops making hyper-speed attacks and begins biting the enemy or running away. This bear can not be tracked with a ranged weapon unless the shooter is a ranger or gunslinger. Attacks on this bear have disadvantage until it is hit for the first time.

Pained Endurance. The bear is trackable with a bow and arrow once it is bloodied (Half health) and begins biting when it is very bloodied (quarter health). At quarter health, the bear either attempts to run, or will stay to protect any cubs it may have and begin an all-out assault.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +7 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 13 (2d8 + 5) piercing damage.

Claws. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 8 (1d6 + 5) slashing damage.

Reactions

Parry. The bear makes an attempt to end any attack on it with a d20+6. This reaction can only be used while the bear is in hyper-speed. The bear must beat the attackers' roll to successfully block the attack. Bludgeoning attacks are halved.

Description

This is a bear. What color bear? It is bear colored. What is bear colored? Typically brown or black. What does this mean for low-level PCs? They will likely die. This bear is hard to target, as it constantly seems to appear in two places at once. This bear can never be charmed or persuaded to join the party. No, not even the druid can convince it. Druids can not mimic its speed, or else they tear themselves apart. It is the magic in the bear's veins that allow it to move so fast. Druids may mimic the teeth, which are hardened, and the eyes, which are resistant to wind and sand. This bear has no difficulty moving through sand, as it has had centuries of evolution take place. It is ill-advised to attack this bear head-on. Mother bears are defensive, and will force groups of adventurers or passers-by to back away before attacking, though if the threat ignores the warnings, the mother will strike. The Terrasque does not scare mothers, much less some measly humans or what-not.

Note: Only mother bears are so fearless, and therefore the bears on a whole are not immune to the frightened status.
