Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If the dragon fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use its Frightful Presence. It then makes three attacks: one with its bite and two with its claws.

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 ft., 1 target. Hit: 32 (4d10 + 12) piercing damage. If the target is Medium or smaller, it is grappled (escape DC 19). Until this grapple ends, the target is restrained, and the dragon can't bite another target.

Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 10 ft., 1 target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 6) slashing damage.

Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +11 to hit, reach 15 feet., 1 target. Hit: 9 (2d6 + 3) bludgeoning damage.

Swallow Whole. The dragon makes one bite attack against a Medium or smaller creature it is grappling. If the attack hits, the target is swallowed, and the grapple ends. The swallowed target is blinded and restrained, it has total cover against attacks and other effects outside the dragon, and it takes 11 (2d10 + 6) piercing damage at the start of each of the dragon's turns. The dragon can have three creature swallowed at a time.

A swallowed target reduced to 0 hit points is instantly swallowed further, moving to the dragon's stomach, where it cannot be retrieved.

If the dragon dies, a swallowed creature is no longer restrained by it and can escape from the corpse using 10 feet of movement, exiting prone.

Legendary Actions

The dragon can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The dragon regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Claw Attack. The dragon makes one claw attack.

Tail Swipe. The dragon makes two Tail attacks, and they must target different creatures.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). The dragon swipes its wings. Up to two creatures within 20 feet of the dragon must make a DC 19 Dexterity saving throw or take 15 (3d6 + 6) bludgeoning damage per wing that hits it. The dragon can then move up to half its flying speed.

Description

Megatooth dragons are unlike other dragons. They have no breath attacks, and their heads are much larger. They have spiky growths on their chins, giving them almost a spike beard, and they have tough scaly ridges all over the bodies. They have four legs, the front two stockier and stronger, the back two almost with their knees on the ground when it walks, and they have two wings extending from their shoulders. Their tails are poorly equipped for defense or offense, and so they rarely use them in combat. A megatooth dragon primarily uses its bite attack to swallow its prey or enemies whole.

Lair and Lair Actions

Megatooth dragons live in large cavernous caves. Their presence causes the caves to fill with stalactites and stalagmites. They care little for collecting treasure, and will usually leave it scattered about. The same applies to conquering nations and kingdoms, they care little for it and seek simply to live their life in harmony. They prefer areas where civilization is nonexistent or is in the early stages of development; areas with great cities are most likely to have more adventurers and warriors to hunt them down for no real reason.

A megatooth dragon will only emerge from its lair if food is scarce inside, which is rare due to their ability to draw creatures to it to feed on, or if they must lay their eggs. Otherwise they will happily live in seclusion within their dark caverns.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the dragon takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the dragon can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Stalactites fall from an area on the ceiling the dragon can see within 120 feet of it. All creatures on the ground in a 30-foot-radius cylinder that goes up to the chosen point must make a Dexterity saving throw DC 18 or be impaled by 1d6 stalactites. For each stalactite, a creature takes 3 piercing damage.
  • All creatures within 300 feet of the dragon must make an Intelligence saving throw or be drawn to the dragon. They are charmed by it for 10 minutes, and must use their action to Dash in the direction of the dragon. Creatures with an Intelligence score of 4 or less automatically fail this saving throw. This effect ends on a creature if it takes damage from any source.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary megatooth dragon’s lair is physically altered by it's presence, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • The floor of the lair is covered in stalagmites, which make it difficult terrain. Any creature that falls prone on the floor takes 3 piercing damage. Likewise, the ceiling is covered in stalactites, which have the same effect to any creature that can walk or climb on it.
  • An unnaturally large amount of creatures dwell within the cave, typically surface-dwelling creatures such as deer and elk that are commonly preyed upon by other predators. However, other more dangerous creatures can be found within.

If the dragon dies, these effects fade over the course of 1d10 days.
