Detect Life. The Ankou can magically sense the presence of creatures up to 5 miles away that aren’t undead or constructs. It knows the general direction they’re in but not their exact locations.
Incorporeal Movement. The Ankou can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.
Enthralling Gaze. When a creature that can see the Ankou’s "face" starts its turn within 30 feet of the Ankou, the Ankou can force it to make a DC 15 Wisdom saving throw if the Ankou isn’t incapacitated and can see the creature. On a failure, the creature is charmed by the Ankou and will help it carry out its duties until the next sunrise unless it is immune to the charmed condition. Otherwise, a creature takes 16 (3d10) psychic damage on a failed save.
Unless surprised, a creature can avert its eyes to avoid the saving throw at the start of its turn. If the creature does so, it has disadvantage on attack rolls against the Ankou until the start of its next turn. If the creature looks at the Ankou in the meantime, it must immediately make the saving throw.
Necrotizing Sickle. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 5 (1d8) slashing damage + 22 (4d10) necrotic damage.
Description
At every human graveyard, every night at the 3rd hour after midnight, a soul rises to collect the souls of the newly dead and buried and guide them to the embrace of the Archangel of Death, Mallathis. These souls are the Ankou, charged by their Archangel to carry out this duty every night. The Ankou is the soul of one of those buried in the graveyard, and serves for one year until it is allowed to pass on, at which point the next soul buried is raised as the new Ankou.
Ankou appear mostly as ghostly versions of their living selves, their bones clearly visible through their translucent flesh and clothing, and wielding a large sickle. Their faces, however, are devoid of any features except for eyes. Their eyes glow with a cold white light that is said to entrance any humanoids that meet their gaze. Ankou only appear at human burial sites and graveyards and only seem to deal with human souls.
