Traits

Keen Hearing and Smell. The wolf has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on hearing or smell.

Pack Tactics. While a Black Winter Wolf is an outcast and loaner to its own kind, it still has an advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of the wolf's allies is within 5 feet of the creature and the ally isn't incapacitated.

Shadow Stealth. While in dim light or darkness, the wolf can take the Hide action as a bonus action.

Darkvision. As the wolf's eye start to change to the silver sheen they are known for, they develop the ability of darkvision and can see in the dark up to 60 feet.

Actions

Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +6 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 11 (2d6 + 4) piercing damage. If the target is a creature, it must succeed on a DC 14 Strength saving throw or be knocked prone.

Cold Breath (Recharge 5–6). The wolf exhales a blast of freezing wind in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 12 Dexterity saving throw, taking 18 (4d8) cold damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Reactions

Because Black Winter Wolves are solitary and intelligent creatures, they are more cautious and calculating about when and how they will attack. If threatened however, they will be very fierce opponents.

Black Winter Wolves are also not as evil as the common Winter Wolf, having not been part of the pack, or under the influence of frost giants for as long in their regular kin. In fact, it has been said that a Black Winter Wolf may even attack other creatures it sees as committing violent acts of evil, though whether this is true or not is a mystery.

Description

The Black Winter Wolf starts its life as a Winter Wolf, but as it matures it mysteriously grows a bit larger and stronger than the average Winter Wolf, their eyes take on a bright silver sheen, and its fur darkens quickly into a thicker, pitch black color that also offers a bit more natural protection. When this happens the wolf becomes an outcast to its own pack. Many Black Winter Wolfs do not survive the pack's attack when outcast, making surviving Black Winter Wolves very rare and usually only spoken about as just rumors or legend. Those that do survive will quickly leave their snowy birthplace, preferring a solitary life in deep woods and mountain areas where they can use their dark fur to better advantage and survival.

Just like their more common Winter Wolf brethren, they understand Common and Giant well enough to follow conversations, though to a greater extent as they are more intelligent than the common Winter Wolf.

Lair and Lair Actions

Black Winter Wolves will tend to make dens in the darkest parts of forests or caves in the mountains and patrol/hunt in a wide area around that location. They usually stay out of site and keep to the shadows as they track and hunt, or even just to curiously watch whatever passes through their area.
