Flame Body.  When a creature grapples the volcarona, it takes 7 (2d6) fire damage.

Innate Spellcasting. The volcarona's innate spellcasting ability is Charisma (spell save DC 18, +10 to hit with spell attacks). The volcarona can innately cast the following spells, requiring no material components:

At will : Bonfire (Level 17)

1/day : Fireball, Heat metal

Actions

Fire Blast. Ranged Spell Attack: +10 to hit, range 150 ft., one target. Hit: 38 (6d8 + 10) fire damage. If the target is a flammable object that is not being worn or carried, it is ignited.

Fiery Dance (Recharge 6).  The volcarona coats itself in flames and flaps it's wings. All creatures within 10ft of it must make a DC 18 dexterity saving throw or take 56 (10d10) fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one.

Legendary Actions

The volcarona can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. The volcarona regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.

Flight. The volcarona moves up to its flying speed.

Fire Blast (Costs 2 Actions). The volcarona makes one fire blast attack

Description

Volcarona is a large, moth-like Pokémon with four small feet. It appears to have compound eyes that are two shades of blue, and there is a red horn-like structure on each side of its face. The fuzz on its upper body is smoky white and tangled. Its abdomen is black in the center and light blue with black dots on the outside. It has six leaf-like wings that are orange in color and have small black spots.

Volcarona releases burning scales from its wings to engulf the battlefield in a sea of fire. Volcarona's flames are said to provide a replacement for the sun when the atmosphere is dark with volcanic ash, and some legends claim that it hatched from a flaming cocoon to save people and Pokémon in freezing climates. It was feared as the "rage of the sun" by ancient people, and it was even worshipped in some places; Volcarona's shrine in Relic Castle remains as a testament to this.

Lair and Lair Actions

Volcarona typically lair in desserts. They are particularly fond of ruins that extend into the underground.

Lair Actions

On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), the volcarona takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; the volcarona can’t use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • The volcarona summons a 5 ft wide orb of fire to a point it can see within 120 ft of it. The orb emits bright light for 120 ft and dim light for another 120 ft and remains until the volcarona dismisses it as an action, uses this lair action again, or dies. Any creature that starts its turn within 30 ft of the orb must make a DC 18 Constitution saving throw, being blinded on a failure. This blindness lasts until the start of the creatures next turn.
  • The volcarona supernaturally traps one large or smaller it can see within 60 ft of it in a vortex of flame which remains until the volcarona dismisses it as an action, uses this lair action again, or dies. At the beginning of it's turn, that creature takes 4 (1d6) fire damage. In order to move, the creature must attempt to escape by making a DC 18 Dexterity saving throw. On a success, the creature can move as normal and the vortex is dismissed. On a failure, the creature takes 7 (2d6) fire damage and cannot move.

Regional Effects

The region containing a legendary volcarona's lair is supernaturally heated and warped, which creates one or more of the following effects:

  • The sun within 6 miles of the volcarona's lair seems unnaturally hot, making any creature within that area under the effect of extreme heat (Detailed on page 110 of the Dungeon Master's Guide) no matter what the actual temperature is.
  • Flammable objects that aren't being worn, carried or otherwise interacted with within 1 mile of the volcarona's lair may burst into flame and form portals to the Elemental Plane of Fire, allowing creatures of elemental fire into the world to dwell nearby.

If the volcarona dies, these effects fade over the course of 1d10 days.
