Keen Smell: The beak thing has advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on smell.

Wind-Up Time: Due to its long neck, it takes time for the beak thing to make beak attacks against their opponents. As a result, the beak thing can't make opportunity attacks.

Scent Sense:

Detection: The beak thing can detect other creatures within 60 feet by sense of smell. Strong scents, such as smoke or garbage, can be detected at twice the range. Overpowering scents, such as animal musk or rotting flesh, can be detected at triple the range. When a beak thing detects a scent, the exact location of the source is not revealed, only that its presence is somewhere within range. Whenever the beak thing comes within 10 feet of the source, it pinpoints the source's location.

Tracking: The beak thing can attempt to follow a scent, making a Wisdom (Perception) check to find or follow the scent. The beak thing tracking by scent can ignore the effects of surface conditions and poor visibility. The typical DC for a fresh trail is 10. This DC increases or decreases depending on how strong the quarry's odor is, the number of creatures and the age of the trail. For each hour that the trail is cold, the DC increases by 2.

Hiding Your Scent: Water, particularly running water, ruins a trail for the beak thing. False and/or powerful odors can easily mask other scents. The presence of such an odor completely spoils the ability to properly detect or identify creatures, and the base DC to track becomes 20 rather than 10.

Actions

Stomp. Melee Attack: +8 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 10 (1d10 + 5) bludgeoning damage and pushed backwards by 5 ft.

Beak Smash. Melee Attack: +8 to hit, reach 10 ft., multi-target. Hit: The beak thing smashes its beak down at a nearby target. The target takes 13 (2d8 + 5) piercing damage and is knocked prone. Any creature within a 5 ft. radius of the target takes half damage.

Piercing Roar. (Recharge 6) A beak thing opens its jaws wide and makes a piercing roar. Each enemy creature that is able to hear the roar must make a DC 14 Wisdom saving throw. Each creature that fails takes (2d6 + 3) thunder damage and is Stunned for 1 minute. A Stunned creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. Each creature that initially succeeds takes half damage and avoids being Stunned.

Reactions

Blood Craving. (Recharge 5-6) When a beak thing smells a wounded (below max hp) creature, it reacts by dashing towards the creature and making one attack.

Alert Pack. When a hostile creature attempts to move out of melee range, the beak thing alerts its pack members with a furious screech. Pack members get advantage when attacking this creature on their next attack.

Voracious Appetite. When a creature is downed, the beak thing will completely focus its attention on this creature. On this beak thing's next turn, it will only focus on eating the downed creature. For each time the beak thing is able to attack the downed creature before they die, the beak thing restores 1d6 + 4 hp. It can continue eating a dead creature up to two times, restoring 1d4 + 4 hp each time. Because of the beak thing's intense focus, any attacks against it in this state will have advantage.

Description

Beak Things, also known as Gutters, are dangerous predators that inhabit deserts and open plains. They are pack creatures and roam in groups anywhere from two to six. These creatures are extremely fast, hit hard and eat their prey alive. Despite their ruthless nature, Beak Things are caring parents and can be found in great numbers at their nests, where they proliferate up 14. A Beak Thing nest is made out in the open and can easily be identified by the bones of unfortunate prey that litter the ground. Depending on the size and success of the nest, up to 20 beak thing eggs can be found laying atop these bone piles. Although beak thing nests are incredibly dangerous, many adventurers seek out these nests due to the sheer value of the eggs. Beak Thing eggs are a delicacy and fetch very high prices to most merchants. Perhaps the ferocity of the Beak Things can partly be explained with their strong social ties to their packs and young.
