Blood Drain. Melee Weapon Attack: +5 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 5 (1d4 + 3) piercing damage, and the stirge attaches to the target. While attached, the target is restrained and the stirge doesn't attack. Instead, at the start of each of the stirge's turns, the target loses 5 (1d4 + 3) hit points due to blood loss. If damage from the stirge's Blood Drain leaves a creature with 0 hit points, that creature becomes petrified.
The stirge can detach itself by spending 5 feet of its movement.
Description
Bloodstone stirges, so called because their blood-draining bite can turn flesh to stone, may or may not have a relationship to the more mundane insects from which they borrow half their name. Some legends say that a stirge leeched blood from a basilisk and was forever changed, while others insist bloodstone stirges were deliberately created by a crazed wizard who somehow bred a stirge and a cockatrice.
Whatever secrets may lie at the heart of their origin, bloodstone stirges are not to be trifled with. The moment the stirge attaches, the victim's blood begins to harden, making it sluggish and impairing its ability to fight back or flee. If the stirge steals enough of the creature's blood, the rest of its body will turn to stone as well, and the insect will fly on in search of less stale meals.
