Description
The Hoplites of the ancient Greek city state of Athens are drawn from the citizens of the Polis, potters, scribes and workers, recruited in a time of war to protect their city state. Among an Athenian army's ranks might even be famous philosophers, wrestlers, and actors. Athenians serve generals and admirals approved by the Citizen's Assembly. Athenians are proud of their direct democracy and freedoms, they can vote on major decisions and choose their leaders.
As guards they can patrol a city, or fortified town, and are also used as the bodyguards of merchants and nobles. Their prime function however, is as an effective formation fighting force in a battle line. The Athenian Hoplites famously defeated the entire invading army of the Persian Empire at the battle of Marathon. In the second Persian invasion of Greece, Athens destroyed the entire Persian navy at the battle of Salamis, by ramming and boarding their ships. Athenian Hoplites are effective marines, skilled at fighting on the decks of their great ships, and making attacks on islands from landing craft. Athenians believe in the Greek Pantheon, and devotedly follow the goddess of wisdom, Athena.
For armor they wear a bronze helmet, a bronze breastplate with muscles carved on it, and wield a large circular bronze shield with a blue symbol of an Owl, the sacred animal of Athena. They are armed with an iron tipped spear, and a short slashing kopis sword as a backup weapon. In formation, with hoplites holding their large shields, only greaves and helmet are visible, creating an effective wall of bronze.
They were decisively defeated by the Spartans in the Peloponnesian war, and were then dominated by Sparta, Thebes, and Macedonia, until Athens was finally conquered by Rome.
