From a Single Ember. If Ai Laau is reduced to zero hit points its body collapses and cools into stone in 1d4 minutes. Once it has cooled, a smaller version of Ai Laau melts out of one of the rocks. This new creature is considered size Tiny and has 1 hit point. It possesses Ai Laau's Hurl Magma attack, but it is now +1 to hit and deals 4 fire damage. If allowed access to fuel for 20 days or introduced to the lava of a volcano, this creature reforms into a full Ai Laau.
Living Lava. When within 30 feet of Ai Laau creatures and nonmagical objects that are not being held by a creature take 1d10 fire damage at the start of the elemental's turn, unless they are behind total cover. Attacking Ai Laau with a nonmagical weapon causes the weapon to gain -1 to hit every time the weapon hits Ai Laau. The weapon is completely destroyed if it has a cumulative -5 to hit from this feature.
Legendary Resistance (3/day). If Ai Laau fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.
Molten Stone. If Ai Laau takes 60 or more cold damage in a single turn, its form partially solidifies until the end of its next turn. While in this state, its Living Lava trait does no damage, its speed is reduced to 20 ft. and any fire damage in its attacks are replaced with bludgeoning damage.
Siege Monster. Ai Laau deals double damage to objects and structures.
Multiattack. Ai Laau makes two Hurl Magma attacks.
Slam. Melee Weapon Attack: +17 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) fire damage plus 23 (3d8 + 10) bludgeoning damage.
Hurl Magma. RangedWeapon Attack: +15 to hit, range 60/240 ft., one target. Hit: 21 (2d10 + 10) fire damage.
Rain of Ash (Recharge 6). Ai Laau fills the air around it with smoke and ash. Creatures within a 90 foot radius of the elemental must make a DC Constitution saving throw. A creature takes 22 (4d10) poison damage plus 11 (2d10) fire damage on a failed save, and half as much on a success. Creatures that fail by 5 or more are blinded until the end of their next turn. Creatures that do not need to breath take no poison damage.
Ai Laau can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. Ai Laau regains spent legendary actions at the start of its turn.
Hurl Magma. Ai Laau makes one hurl magma attack.
Lava Stream. (Costs 3 Actions). Ai Laau emits a 5 foot wide stream of lava that starts where it is standing and extends 30 feet. The stream can bend and move as Ai Laau wishes, but it cannot flow uphill and cannot enter another creature's space. This stream remains for 1d4 minutes before solidifying into stone.
Move. Ai Laau moves up to its speed.
Description
The boarder of the Elemental Plane of Earth and Elemental Plane of Fire is a shifting swamp of lava where the ground is in flux between solid stone and liquid magma. The elemental creatures that populate it are a similar combination of earth and fire, and are usually content to stay in the border and be ignored by the denizens of Earth and Fire.
That changed when the elder elemental Ai Laau emerged from its home and went on a rampage across the Plane of Earth. The humanoid tower of magma felt an all-consuming desire to devour everything in its path, and only the magics of the Dao Princes stopped it from melting the City of Jewels to slag.
The Dao banished Ai Laau to a volcano in Material Plane, and forced it into hibernation. The elemental is restless, and the slightest disturbance may cause it to awaken and erupt form its prison.
Ai Laau is a towering figure made of lave and chunks of stone. It emits plumes of ash as it devours whatever creatures or objects it can find. It cleas the forests of entire islands and then hurls lava into the ocean until it builds a bridge to the next island.
If Ai Laau is destroyed, a spark of its hunger remains. This ember must be stamped out to permanently kill the destroyer. If left alone, the ember will seek out leaves and twigs to burn and grow. Eventually, it will have devoured enough to reform, and Ai Laau can stalk the earth again.
