Legendary Resistance (3/Day). If Vanadon-Necroth fails a saving throw, he can choose to succeed instead.

Magic Resistance. Vanadon-Necroth has advantage on saving throws against spells or other magical effects.

Magic Weapons. Vanadon-Necroth's weapon attacks are magical.

Signature Spellcasting. Vanadon-Necroth always has the following 1st, 2nd, and 3rd-level spells prepared and can cast them at will:

Spellcasting. Vanadon-Necroth is a 20th-level spellcaster. His spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 20, +12 to hit with spell attacks). He has the following wizard spells prepared:

Actions

Multiattack. The dragon can use his Frightful Presence. He then makes three attacks: one with his bite and two with his claws.

  • Bite. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 10 ft., one target. Hit: 16 (2d10 + 5) piercing damage, or 26 (4d10 + 5) with reapers hourglass.
  • Claw. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 5 ft., one target. Hit: 12 (2d6 + 5) slashing damage, or 19 (4d6 + 5) with reapers hourglass.
  • Tail. Melee Weapon Attack: +14 to hit, reach 15 ft., one target. Hit: 14 (2d8 + 5) bludgeoning damage, or 23 (4d8 +5) with reapers hourglass.

Frightful Presence. Each creature of Vanadon-Necroth's choice that is within 120 feet of the dragon and aware of it must succeed on a DC 20 Wisdom saving throw or become frightened for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success. If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to the dragon's Frightful Presence for the next 24 hours.

Breath Weapons (Recharge 5–6). Vanadon-Necroth uses one of the following breath weapons.

Desiccating Breath. Vanadon-Necroth exhales a blast of super-dry air in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a DC 20 Constitution saving throw, taking 58 (13d8) necrotic damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. If this damage reduces a creature to 0 hit points, it must succeed on a DC 20 saving throw or be disintegrated. A disintegrated creature and everything it is wearing and carrying, except magic items, are reduced to a pile of fine gray dust. The creature can be restored to life only by means of a true resurrection or a wish spell.

Paralyzing Breath. Vanadon-Necroth exhales paralyzing gas in a 60-foot cone. Each creature in that area must succeed on a DC 20 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. A creature can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the effect on itself on a success.

Change Shape. Vanadon-Necroth magically polymorphs into a humanoid or beast that has a challenge rating no higher than his own, or back into his true form. It reverts to its true form if he dies. Any equipment he is wearing or carrying is absorbed or borne by the new form (his choice).

Temporal manipulation. As an action Vanadon may create up to two temporal duplicates of himself. They appear in a space he chooses within 60ft. They have the same statistics as Vanadon, but have only 400 health, may use only multiattack or any of the reactions. When Vanadon is killed if he has any temporal clones active, the one with the most health is absorbed and he regains 400 health.

Reactions

Vanadon has an extra reaction for each temporal clone he has summoned. He regains one of these at the start of each turn of either himself or his clones. The reaction may be used by either Vanadon or one of his temporal clones.

Reapers Hourglass. Vanadon causes time to flow faster around one creature that just damaged him, causing any melee attacks by him or his temporal clones to deal and additional 2 dice of damage to the target.

Reverse the flow. Vanadon can use his reaction to cause an attacks damage to be reversed and instead of taking the damage healing himself for 23 (5d6+5).

Legendary Actions

Vanadon-Necroth can take 3 legendary actions, choosing from the options below. Only one legendary action option can be used at a time and only at the end of another creature's turn. He regains spent legendary actions at the start of his turn.

Tail Attack. Vanadon-Necroth makes a tail attack.

Wing Attack (Costs 2 Actions). Vanadon-Necroth beats his wings. Each creature within 15 feet of him must succeed on a DC 20 Dexterity saving throw or take 19 (4d6 + 5) bludgeoning damage and be knocked prone. He can then fly up to half its flying speed.

Unwind Death (Costs 3 Actions). Vanadon-Necroth chooses a creature that died within the last minute that he can see. That creature returns to life, regains 100 hit points, and is charmed by Vanadon-Necroth. While charmed in this way, it must obey Vanadon-Necroth's commands to the best of its ability. It can make a DC 20 Charisma saving throw at the end of each of its turns, ending the charm on itself on a success.

Mythic Actions

When Vanadon and his temporal duplicates are defeated, the needle revives him in a flux state between time. He gains a +5 bonus to his AC, his attacks have advantage, and he gains the following mythic actions:

  • Interval Break (Costs 2 actions) Vanadon causes time to shudder and casts a spell of his choice from his spell list, the spell takes effect and if it normally requires concentration he does not need to concentrate on it.
  • Epoch Eruption (Costs 3 actions) Vanadon causes reality and time to warp around any creature of his choice within 120ft. the affected creatures are nearly torn apart by the shifting timelines. Any affected creature mus make a DC 20 constitution saving throw or take 30 (4d10+10) force damage

Lair and Lair Actions

The archive-lair of Vanadon-Necroth floats amidst the islands of planar detritus adrift in the cosmic oceans of the Astral Plane. Its crumbling stone structure is perched atop the skull of a dead god. The remains of Vanadon's castle are labyrinthine and laden with magical traps, but the dragon itself rarely leaves the archive's heart. This central library is a massive circular chamber, nearly one thousand feet in diameter and rising over five hundred feet up. Its walls are covered from floor to ceiling with bookshelves, each one crammed full of arcane and esoteric texts, and relics of bygone ages. Dozens of galleries curl around the outer walls, each fifteen feet above the other, and floating staircases drift idly throughout the library, connecting the different levels of the archive together at a whim. Some stairs spin lazily in midair as if to encourage visitors to defy gravity and climb them upsidedown or at an angle perpendicular to the ground. Vanadon-Necroth has not left his astral domain in the five decades since he first settled there. He spends his endless days in meditation at the center of his archive.

Lair Actions On initiative count 20 (losing initiative ties), Vanadon-Necroth takes a lair action to cause one of the following effects; Vanadon-Necroth can't use the same effect two rounds in a row:

  • Vanadon-Necroth regains a spell slot of 8th level or lower. Roll a d8 to determine the level of the spell slot regained. If he has no spent slots of a level equal to or lower than the result of the roll, nothing happens.
  • Vanadon-Necroth randomly casts a spell from the 20 spells he has prepared. Roll 1d20 and count up from the lowestlevel spell he currently has prepared with his Spellcasting feature (starting with his 4th-level spells). Once a spell has been selected, he chooses its target or where the spell's area effects. Casting a spell in this way does not consume a spell slot.
  • Vanadon-Necroth chooses a bookcase or floating staircase within his lair and telekinetically hurls it at a creature that he can see within 120 feet of him, making a ranged weapon attack with a +12 bonus to hit. On a hit, the creature takes 35 (10d6) bludgeoning damage and must succeed on a DC 25 Strength saving throw or fall prone.
