Description

Does anyone else think its armor class should be at least 17?
I mean, come on. It's an Ankylosaurus. The most sturdy and well-armored creature to have ever lived on the planet.
This makes about as much sense as a crocodile having an armor class of 12. It should be 13.
I think I might agree with you. A Tortle has a base AC of 17....I think the anklyosaurus might be at least as good as a tortle.

I agree also. I wouldn't go so far as to say 17 or higher, but I feel like 16 is a good place for an ankylosaurus.
I feel it is also worth taking into account that AC takes into account the size of the creature. It is inherently easier to hit a bigger target. So that may be an explanation as to why it is only 15.
I would go as far as even saying damage reduction then as well. While yes its easy to hit but normal damage would not apply either.
As CoolColton94 said, we also have to take size into account. Ankylosaurus is a huge creature, which I think is reasonable since the real Ankylosaurus was 6-8m long (20-26ft) and around 1.7m tall (around 6ft), and at least irl its armor only protects it from above; it's belly is soft and vulnerable, and since all official PC races are either small or medium, it should be easy for them to hit the ankylosaur's unprotected parts. Effective against a 12m (~39ft) T-Rex that can't crouch without getting its jaw clobbered, useless against a bunch of tiny humanoids.
Maybe a trait could be added that gives Large (or Huge, not sure which one) and larger creatures disadvantage in attack rolls against it or something along those lines, though it would be useless against PCs unless you're using homebrew races, polymorphing or the Enlarge/Reduce spell.
EDIT: It could also receive an AC bonus against said creatures, but I imagine this would make the CR calculation a bit messy.

So going back to 3.5 and Pathfinder, a Huge creature faces a -2 AC penalty. That's probably why it's a 15 and not 17 as so many have pointed out.
It is HUGE….Literally. That makes it very easy to hit.
Why is there only generic beast filler art for this? Surely there is some official or unencumbered Ankylosaur art that could be used? Would make this (and all the other dinosaurs), and thus all games set in Chult, more interesting and satisfying
