Posted Jun 21, 2018Describe the following to your players to provide better immersion - (show, don't tell during their first encounter):
The large beast in front of you has a pair of grasping pincers (pedipalps) and scuttles along the terrain on eight legs. Its long, narrow, and segmented tail is carried forward in a curve over its back which ends in a terrifying stinger.
In addition, you might want to allow them a Wisdom-Survival check to know the following (accumulated - a roll of 25 or above would know all):
DC5 (very easy): attacks with two claws and one sting
DC10 (easy): each claw can grapple an opponent and its sting is poisonous
DC15 (medium): does not have any damage resistances nor damage vulnerabilities
DC20 (hard): does not have any damage immunities
DC25 (very hard): does not have any condition immunities - can perceive its surroundings without relying on sight to 60'

Posted Apr 15, 2019This would make for an incredible wild shape for druid...if it wasn't for those dreadfully low + to hit modifiers. Seriously why on earth would a 9th level druid turn into something that has +4 to hit? The amount of damage this can potentially deal is great for wild shaped creature ''41 average dpr'' but good luck hitting anything with AC of 18 or above.

Posted May 14, 2019Thankfully there are things to help with that a little. For example the item Insignia of Claws applies to both unarmed strikes and natural weapons. So at least there’s a +1 there lol.
Definitely a form that benefits extra hard from a wizard’s familiar taking the Help action for that advantage.
edit: Also just remembered that the druid could sacrifice a claw attack to try and Shove the target prone for advantage as well. Though I guess a +2 to Athletics ain’t much better than a +4 to hit lol.

Posted Jan 11, 2021Why does the scorpion have blindsight? You'd think if it wherefrom smell or sound they would also have keen senses, but no. I suppose it doesn't matter *too much* in terms of balance, just trying to understand the logic.

Posted Jan 19, 2021Honestly: DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE THIS POISON DAMAGE!
I threw a 4 of those against a Level 5 party of 5 and it almost ended in a TPK... 4d10 (or 2d10) and a natural AC of 15 is no joke...
One of those guys oneshot our Sorcerer...

Posted May 11, 2021My friend DM's a game where a Giant Scorpion attacked and grabbed a PC with one claw... turned to the side and dropped him over the ledge with his free action.
The PC used his Reaction to successfully grab the ledge.
The Giant Scoprion used it's other claw attack to grab the same PC again... and then immediately dropped him.
The PC had no Reaction to grab the ledge this time, equating to a long fall down a chasm some 100-odd feet. The other players ended up reviving that PC after the battle, but he now has a fear of both Scorpions and Heights.
...correct me if I am wrong, but this seems to be a legit option, all in the Giant Scorpion's turn.. correct? letting go of a grapple is a free action, and there is nothing that states you can't break apart Multi-Attack with movement... correct?

Posted May 13, 2021To be quite honest the giant scorpion has an intelligence of 1. Its just not smart enough to do anything but react.
Dropping a PC off a cliff is way beyond its ability to plan.

Posted May 13, 2021hmmm.. guess someone should have pointed that out to the DM... think the panic and laughter was too great to even consider it's intelligence lol
so... assume it was a moon druid then that retains intelligence etc.., just for the mechanics of it... should the ruling have been feasible

Posted May 15, 2021I would have at least given them a dex save each time to attempt to grab the ledge.

Posted Jun 27, 2021My dm threw 20 of these at our level 9 party.
I locked them all out with wall of Force and we wore them down with damage that got past the wall.

Posted Jul 4, 2021Insignia of Claws is only in Hoard of the Dragon Queen.
The multi-attack is the action. Monsters don't work the same as characters. You would have to take the attack action and you could only shove once in that turn (and make no further attacks).
