Posted Dec 11, 2019If I had to guess, since they are typically subservient to illithids I would say probably not.
I'd say it's up to you though, there's no reason a few grimlock couldn't have defected.

Posted Apr 2, 2020They are pretty much cannibal cavemen. If you see any scenario, in which one can make cannibal cavemen tribe work for him, then the answer to your question is yes.
They may not value gold all that much. Maybe it’s shiny beads? Metal tools? Hapless humanoids to eat? Spices that go well with an elf stew?
I’ve ran an adventure, where a low-tier necromancer was using them as mooks. He would take human sacrifices and trinkets from local villagers to “protect” them from Grimlocks amongst other things.
Also, not a great encounter for level 1 party as they tend to one-hit anybody who isn’t a martial.

Posted Apr 2, 2020Thanks. That was quite awhile ago, but I think a few Orcs hired them to destroy a village. Not sure what their exact payment was, but if their cannibalistic cavemen, I think eating the people in the village would probably be payment enough.
also, they were 5th level, and there was a few of them and a few Orcs in the final encounter.

Posted May 9, 2020Yes, absolutely
The value of gold is little bit lost on them, but you could easily get them on your side with payment of meat and trinkets, just like with orcs.

Posted Mar 26, 2022I have literally never seen or heard of this creature before. Neat, definitely a very interesting stat block. If I ever have my players go to the Underdark, this'll definitely be used. For anyone else, you probably shouldn't use this creature on a level one party, because they do enough damage in one hit to one-shot the average party member. I also like how grimlocks are pretty much the only humanoid to be their own race entirely. Like, pretty much everything else is either (any race) or (gnome), etc, but this is just this.

Posted Oct 28, 2024If you're worried about damage reduce their CR to like about ⅛ the reduce to hit bonus by like 1 and get rid of the piercing damage, they'd still be a heavy hitter but this should make them a little more bearable for 1st LVs, please correct me if I'm wrong
