Posted Jun 8, 2020These guys are terrible compared to real life. I use worg stats minus the languages and alignment when I want more realistic hyenas, and I make them beasts instead of monstrosities.

Posted Jun 15, 2020Maybe drop the Strength to 14, change the bite damage to 1d10, 1d8 or 2d4 and make them Medium. This would probably make them CR 1/4.

Posted Dec 1, 2020There are 4 kinds of hyenas in our world (planet earth). I treat this version as the smaller types (striped and aardwolf hyenas). These ones don't laugh. The spotted hyena, i.e. the laughing hyena, is the bigger, more popular version. Watching the Prey TV series on Amazon Prime as prompted me to create a homebrew version of it available here.

Posted Nov 26, 2021Hyenas have one among the strongest bites compared to their size, strong enough to crack bones with a single bite, so much more than a lion actually. Lions often have to back down to hyenas because if they risk a fight, they might be permanently crippled.

Posted Mar 1, 2022I've had an idea rattling around in my brain that it might be interesting to make it so that when with a group of gnolls a hyena can use an action to eat enough of a corpse to instantly transform into a gnoll. I kinda like the idea of the hyenas being not much of a threat to PCs during the battle, but if it's in a village or something with gnolls on the rampage than the players have to try to keep the hyenas away from any bodies or else they'll have more gnolls to deal with.

Posted Oct 15, 2022Im fairly certain this was the intention with these guys. Realistically hyenas should be as strong was wolves if not a little stronger but in combination with gnolls that would be brutal to a low-level party, so they nerfed them. Without gnolls around they are useless but in a gnoll horde they're decent hunting hounds and can become more gnolls if led by a Fang of Yeenoghu.

Posted Oct 15, 2022Hyenas are nocturnal, but apparently evolution in D&D doesn't account for evolved eyesight. Add a little realism and give these guys darkvision 60'.

Posted Nov 28, 2023Spotted Hyenas are naturally resistant to diseases and poisons and should have advantage when rolling against these. Although they can carry various diseases, they are generally a asymptomatic. Likewise, hyenas have been seen being bitten by a rattlesnake and only temporarily effected by the poison.

Posted Apr 19, 2024the bite part is correct(maybe 2d10 piercing damage and it grapples you because that's what real hyenas do) but the lion part is actually quite the opposite
