Encounter Builder BETA Release Sep 24, 2019
Greetings Beyonders!
We're happy to announce an BETA release of the Encounter Builder tool!
The BETA release is to stress test the environment and scale our data base to give users the best possible experience. After we have validated our testing, we will iterate on the existing Encounter Builder and future features to supplement this growing toolset.
What Is Available in the Beta
The Beta currently has the following features:
- Streamlines Dungeon Master calculations of Challenge Rating (CR) vs Party level and size
- Plain text entry fields for a summary, description, and treasure
- Access to all free, purchased and homebrew monsters with easy dropdown monster cards
- Selectable Monster Library filters
- Intelligent Search for rapid lookup
- Sortable Monster Library
- PC Dragondrop <- YES (this is meant to be humorous)
- Dynamic Encounter Summary calculating
- Encounter custom naming
- Saving to “My Encounters”
- My Encounter Listing
- Sortable My Encounter Library
- Encounter Summary View
- Tooltips
- Integrate with Campaign (characters)
- Running an Encounter
- Copy Encounter
What is NOT Available in the Beta
The Beta does not have the following features, but they are planned in future development efforts:
- Generate Random Encounters
- Save My Encounters in folders
- Expanded Encounter Details (Rich Text entry)
- Upload Maps
- Upload Images
- Filter by ownership
- Encounters for Published Adventures
- Sharing Encounters Publicly
The EB has incorporated the fluid and elegant design of D&D Beyond. Within a feature rich environment and architecture, DMs and Content Creators will no longer need to worry if the Encounters they have created will be over or under powered.
Whether creating a new Encounter or adjusting a pre-existing one the Encounter Builder will be an essential tool for DM preparation.
The Encounter Summary page will eventually allow DMs to run their encounters with one browser page. The Encounter Builder will benefit from the new functionality as the team adds high demand items like; initiative and hit point tracking, condition marking and campaign character integration.
How to Provide Feedback
As always, your feedback is valued as a huge driving force behind what we do at D&D Beyond. After you give the encounter builder a try, you can share your feedback in four different ways:
- The Encounter Builder Feedback forum
- Taking the Beta Survey (coming soon) by clicking on the button near the encounter name on the builder page
- The #ddb-feedback channel in Discord
Thanks again for your help - we look forward to the updates to come!
What kind of mobile are you using ? Seems to work fine for me on iOS
Having trouble on Android (Galaxy 9+) cant touch any of the monster tabs to scroll without adding it to the encounter and when the screen is 99% monster tabs, scrolling is basically impossible.
What are the tooltips and how to use them ? i seem to be unable to find them
Additionally, it would be super convenient to be able to save a customized list of sources. It's really annoying to filter by the same sources every time.
You beautiful nerds. I love it.
Now if only we could get these saved encounters to show up in the mobile app so you don't have to be online to use them.
I don't see why you couldn't just add that to the list of characters in the party, assuming such an NPC has class levels
Have you put any thought into having sub folders for My Character Slots? This would be useful if a DM is running multiple campaigns and wants to separate PC's.
I'm loving the Beta Test Encounter Builder. I've been using in my sessions, and it's been keeping me organized, and kept combat going at a good pace. My suggestion is that it have some kind of printable format. If I could go from the encounter builder to print a PDF with all of the monsters' stats, that would definitely help me out. Keep up the good work!
I am noticing a bit of a bug. When you use a current campaign as the base for the encounter, it does not update as the Characters do. I'm not sure if this is intended, or not, but the character portion seems to set once. if Character composition for that campaign levels up or changes (adding in a new character to/removing one from the campaign) the encounter does not update, and requires you to unassign and reassign that campaign. Not an issue for singular encounters, but if you're tracking multiple for one campaign it is an issue to go to each encounter to unassign/reassign the campaign.
Posted here, should this go in the survey?
already reported, is currently working has designed ( asked same few weeks ago) .
Can you add the ability to assign loot drops to the monsters. Preferably with the ability to link to the item. Even if it was just a notes tooltip or something. I would love to have this all in one place rather than use a separate spreadsheet or something
The latest updates seem like a great addition. :)
hello. i, trying to use the encounter builder through my home-brew campaign, however it appears no monsters are appearing even though my filters are off.
I really love the encounter builder and the ease of it. I recently tried to build a campaign and connect all my players. I noticed that even when I connect my campaign it doesn't auto-update my player character stats when they update on their character sheet. I have gone into the editor, deleted the connected campaign and then re-selected the campaign and it will update all of that info. Are there plans to automate this?
Also, is it possible to add an easy way under my encounters to connect a campaign if you forget to add it under editor? Going through the edit tab every time for every encounter I want to connect can be quite tedious.
In Encounter Builder, Under Source, could you add an option that is My Sourcebooks?
Thank you for having such a great resource to use, I enjoy it quite thoroughly.
Finally got to use this tool for real and it's incredibly helpful! I had two thoughts/issues with it though.
The first is something I'm sure is on the roadmap for the future, but having a way to "finish" the encounter would be great. Like once the monsters are all dead, I could click a button and have the calculated XP automatically distribute to the character.
The second is something I'm not sure if it's not implemented yet or a bug based on reading other comments. When I add my campaign to the encounter and it autopopulates with the active characters, it doesn't add any of their stats, only level. Would be nice if at least their HP would populate in there. I've noticed other people talk about how they aren't seeing updated stats, but I'm not even getting initial stats.
Thanks!
Keep up the good work
YES! I was just about to suggest this. That would be a huge boon. "Neutral NPC" and "allied NPC" lists would be swell.
Hey it would be great to see a tick box next to the player and monster initiatives that the DM can tick to show if that creature has used their reaction for that round of combat!
I usually keep track of it pretty well on a physical notebook, but sometimes you just forget if one of your players used their reaction already to protect or use an opportunity attack, or if they did it last round.
I think pretty much everything I said has been covered by other people already, but just in case:
This is awesome, but I have a couple of suggestions:
Again, this is a fantastic tool, and I can't wait for it to get even better. Thanks!
1. Need to be able to move monsters to ally with the PCs to calculate the true encounter balance.
2. Need to be able to add DoIP Sidekicks from Extras on character sheet (or add separately as an allied monster)
