Hey Folks,
Today is a big day for our team. We're releasing the first production test of our Game Log which will allow you all to share your dice rolls with other players in your campaign!
This is part of our Digital Dice Open Beta and is now available to all users! Everyone will have access to test it out and give us feedback.
How-to Guide
If you'd like to try it out, make sure your character is in a campaign. If you don't have a campaign, you can create one and add your characters to it to test it out yourself.
Once you have a character in a campaign, you'll see the campaign listed in the top right of the character sheet like always as well as a new button that will open the Game Log.
Pro Tip: To test the game log by yourself, you can add multiple of your own characters to a single campaign, open those characters in different browser windows and watch one character's rolls display the results on the other character's Game Log.
With the Game Log open, you will see new rolls from other characters show up at the bottom of the Game Log. If you don't have the Game Log open when another character makes a roll, a notification will pop up to let you know.
If you prefer to keep the side panel open to always see the roll results of other players, you can use the buttons at the top of the panel to lock the side panel open and even nest it side-by-side in with the character sheet. Play around with what works best for you.
The Game Log also lets you see the history of your rolls and all other rolls from characters in the campaign! To see rolls in the past, scroll up into the history of the Game Log. When you find the roll you're looking for in the past, you can open it by clicking the result.
Also, at the bottom of the roll result, you'll see the actual die that was used with its result. If multiple dice were rolled, you can click that die in the bottom left of the roll result and see each die and its results. You can also get a better view of the dice set that was used for the roll. Clicking the"View Dice Set" will take you to the marketplace page where you can zoom in/out and rotate the dice set to see better details of the dice set itself.
The Game Log around D&D Beyond
You'll also notice the Game Log in other places around the site. The campaign page itself now has a slide-out panel that houses the Game Log for that campaign. You will also see the Game Log in the Combat Tracker for encounters that have linked a campaign in the Encounter Builder. On those pages, the Game Log works the same as it does on the character sheet.
The Future of the Game Log
Sharing dice results is just the start. Keep an eye out for new features on the Game Log.
Here's a list of things we have planned right away, in no particular order.
- The ability to only share with the DM for the campaign
- The ability to not share with the group
- Game Log on the mobile app
- Game Log and Avrae sync
- Rolling on Monster Stat Blocks in the Combat Tracker
Feedback
We want your feedback! Please continue to leave your feedback on the Digital Dice Feedback form. We want to hear from you.
We're excited to hear what you all think!
Very exciting stuff. Doesn't seem to be auto updating yet (when a player rolls, I see they rolled but don't see the result until I reload the page), but I understand this is a beta and look forward to what comes next!
Edit: 1 minute later, the auto updating is now working - I spoke too soon!
This ^^^
This is AMAZING news. My #1 desired feature! THANK YOU!
Looks like it's all working as intended to this point. Very happy to see this and looking forward to the next phase.
Really like the fact that rolling advantage /disadvantage / crit etc is so easy but only needs to happen when it's meant to. I don't like loads of on screen dice rolls that don't count.
Unusable in a real game as it stands with no DM rolling available (that's ok I know its just the first step ) so please make rollable monster stat blocks a priority. Also an ability to do hidden rolls slightly less important to me ( can always use my real dice at my desk ).
this is amazing. i can not express how much time this will save people from needing to make roll20 character sheets, just for the ability to roll with their abilities with one click. if a virtual playing field were to be added in at some future point, this would be THE place to go for dnd. roll20 dnd5e traffic will move to dndbeyond b/c of this innovation, and i say good. roll20 has been stagnant for far too long, i am glad dndbeyond saw the opportunity and took it.
I've tested the log, and it seems to have an error when rolling initiative.
One of my players when rolling initiative (in their charater sheet) it didn't show the box below with the final result. It only showed the dice.
On another note, in the combat tracker it would be awesome if, when the players roll for initiative, that it added that to their initative in the tracker.
Right click or Press Hold on a tablet, gives you the options for Adv or Dis. and if Crits it'll also double dice for damage automatically.
is there a way for dm to roll inlog?
Feature Request : Optional Pop-Out window for the Game Log vs always attached to the window. I noted that the log extends to the length of the player sheet vs the actual window causing one to have to scroll down the page to see the rolls and then back up the page to see the upper part of their character sheet. With a pop out window that is adjustable in size it would allow us to even move the roll log onto another monitor.
1) How many rolls will remain logged?
2) How do you clear the log?
Definitely a promising direction and with the mentioned future enhancements like hiding rolls, etc., will be great. There are two things that I keep running into with Combat Tracker and the Virtual Dice. I have a fairly good computer and the dice rolls are really sluggish, taking between 8-12 seconds to resolve and display. There should be a way to do a simple quick roll. There are sites like rolling dice with friends that take literally a half second to roll and display. FWIW, the mobile version of the dice resolve very quickly in comparison.
The second thing I keep running into is accidentally or intentionally leaving the encounter page. All of the Initiatives and damage tracking gets lost. There should be a way to keep that data past the page session. I've resorted to taking screen shots of the combat tracker or writing it down just incase I close the tab or window.
Thanks for the progress!
Does this insert into play by post games, on the forum?
If I had any immediate suggestion or critique, it would be that the roll log needs to be its own separate overlay independent from the tooltip/description/whatever overlays that pop up when you click on stuff. Its a bit tedious to keep having to bring the roll log back up again after looking at a spell description or something. I can lock the overlay in place, but I can't actually lock the contents of it (keeping it displaying the roll log).
Maybe make it so that you can have the roll log on one side of the character sheet and the info overlays on the other?
Other than that, this was definitely a much needed feature!
Are there any plans for this to be integrated into the twitch overlay?
Feature request: ability to turn off this feature.
Exactly what I was waiting for (especially with some dodgy, somewhat untrustworthy players!).
This is great!
Initial feedback would be great to have an ability to "attack" (i.e. make attack and damage roll in one click) and possibly even cast + roll (functionality exists in Beyond20).
Also I know its a physics based roll but it'd be nice if possible not to require the tab you rolled on to be prioritized to see the update in the log.
Is it intentional that we can't see other people's rolls until after 20 minutes? For some reason we can only see other member roll values after 20 minutes, at 19 minutes you can't see the value but then when it ticks over to 20 minutes we can see them. It happens for all the members of our party which is strange. At the start of the night, it seemed like we could see them right after it was rolled but it's hard to tell now since older rolls are always visible. We can always see that a roll was done, it's just the value that's hidden.
Did some testing today where we full on did a campaign with it 5 players at once, my only complaint is for some reason half the time the rolls bug out and don't show up on screen they act like they are loading and we have to refresh to load the log properly.
This is great... However, I think it would be great if we were able to move & resize the game log window at will.
