Hey Folks,
Today is a big day for our team. We're releasing the first production test of our Game Log which will allow you all to share your dice rolls with other players in your campaign!
This is part of our Digital Dice Open Beta and is now available to all users! Everyone will have access to test it out and give us feedback.
How-to Guide
If you'd like to try it out, make sure your character is in a campaign. If you don't have a campaign, you can create one and add your characters to it to test it out yourself.
Once you have a character in a campaign, you'll see the campaign listed in the top right of the character sheet like always as well as a new button that will open the Game Log.
Pro Tip: To test the game log by yourself, you can add multiple of your own characters to a single campaign, open those characters in different browser windows and watch one character's rolls display the results on the other character's Game Log.
With the Game Log open, you will see new rolls from other characters show up at the bottom of the Game Log. If you don't have the Game Log open when another character makes a roll, a notification will pop up to let you know.
If you prefer to keep the side panel open to always see the roll results of other players, you can use the buttons at the top of the panel to lock the side panel open and even nest it side-by-side in with the character sheet. Play around with what works best for you.
The Game Log also lets you see the history of your rolls and all other rolls from characters in the campaign! To see rolls in the past, scroll up into the history of the Game Log. When you find the roll you're looking for in the past, you can open it by clicking the result.
Also, at the bottom of the roll result, you'll see the actual die that was used with its result. If multiple dice were rolled, you can click that die in the bottom left of the roll result and see each die and its results. You can also get a better view of the dice set that was used for the roll. Clicking the"View Dice Set" will take you to the marketplace page where you can zoom in/out and rotate the dice set to see better details of the dice set itself.
The Game Log around D&D Beyond
You'll also notice the Game Log in other places around the site. The campaign page itself now has a slide-out panel that houses the Game Log for that campaign. You will also see the Game Log in the Combat Tracker for encounters that have linked a campaign in the Encounter Builder. On those pages, the Game Log works the same as it does on the character sheet.
The Future of the Game Log
Sharing dice results is just the start. Keep an eye out for new features on the Game Log.
Here's a list of things we have planned right away, in no particular order.
- The ability to only share with the DM for the campaign
- The ability to not share with the group
- Game Log on the mobile app
- Game Log and Avrae sync
- Rolling on Monster Stat Blocks in the Combat Tracker
Feedback
We want your feedback! Please continue to leave your feedback on the Digital Dice Feedback form. We want to hear from you.
We're excited to hear what you all think!
I would like to see it as a popout window for DM's who just wanna see the log while using a VTT
I second that. The log should be on a different frame, separated from the sheet. It's annoying and you have to turn it on and off all the time because it covers information.
It has a lock on the frame which is helpful but it doesn't persist through reloads (side effect of the rolls not showing up half the time except as loading boxes) and it doesn't stay locked on all pages which I feel is hit or miss and as a DM when I gotta hotswap pages it gets lost in translation
love the direction ddb is going in!
i know you guys gotta sell these virtual dice but maybe only show the dice name after clicking on the icon or hovering over it? it would be a bit more visually clean
majestic! now we need monster roll in the encounter builder section to reach perfection!!
Feature Request: A roll in the DDB Player app triggers an actual Roll in the DDB character website. This roll can then be picked up by other services via the api.
This is an excellent feature. It would be great if priority could be placed on DMs being able to hide rolls from players, as this is fairly important in my opinion. Sometimes numbers need to be altered or hidden to push the narrative, add suspense and prevent players from figuring out monster stats and getting too comfortable. Allowing the DMs results to get ahead of the narrative takes away from the immersion.
Seconded
Keep an eye out next week :)
I noticed yesterday that if I roll ad hoc dice from the encounter builder screen from an encounter associated with a given campaign that the rolls show up in the game log. I'll take that as a good sign that DM and monster rolls are on the not too distant horizon . . .
AD
you should be able to role for the extras tab. That way if you are a beast-master ranger you can roll for your panther and share it
Give the DM an independent Dice Roller the players can see in the log
Very cool!
Just wanted to say GREAT JOB GUYS! This is brilliant!
Can a die roller for DM be hooked into this somehow?
Love this new feature. Now I don’t have to wait on my fiancé to relinquish my laptop to play and I can DM (constricted).
it’d be great if there was a way to reset the game log or have a way to differentiate sessions and the DM can section it off.
Some DM controls would be helpful -
First one comes to mind is a DM Only CLEAR LOG feature.
Another one could be PAUSE LOG
And maybe SUSPEND CHARACTER ROLLS FROM LOG (this could temporarily prevent a rogue player from spamming the log, some of us have children players ;-)
I'm sure you can think of a few more.
Great work team, continue to astound us :-)
Love it! Keep up the good work. My players are particularly interested in Avrae sync! They love Avrae initiative tracker but the long command lines are a pain for those unfamiliar with command line environments! Some kind of "target" dropdown selection of the creatures or pc's in the current avrae initiative group would be a challenging but worthwhile feature!
But the rolls made on the player app doesn't appear in the game logs...
This is great! One bit of advice: make the sidebar with the game log stay open when you roll dice.
I love this, but I'm a DM and generally don't make my rolls "behind the screen;" is there or will there be a way for a DM to roll dice within the game log? It will help with my players' trust issues! (kidding. maybe)
