New Species and Backgrounds to Begin Your Tale

An adventurer summoning a water spirit.

In Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass, you'll find new species and backgrounds to start your character's journey with the island's unique blend of mystery, whimsy, and magic. Whether you're a frog-like nakudama wanderer or a glyph-seeking dara, the new species options in this book are the foundation from which your character will grow:

  • Dara: Mysterious beings born from the roots of glyph-bearing trees, dara inherit the memories and skills of past lives through symbols left by their elder kin. Naturally curious, they're drawn to uncovering the secrets and can create unique paper talismans that bestow abilities on those who wield them.
  • Nakudama: Small, amphibious adventurers with expressive tongues and boundless enthusiasm. These creatures live life to the fullest, often collecting stories and soaking in every experience Obojima has to offer—from warm tea to wild storms.

Obojima also introduces six new backgrounds tied to its central factions and magical traditions. These options help you define your character's early experiences and relationships:

A witch's hat
  • Apprentice of AHA: You studied with the knowledge-hungry members of AHA, exploring ruins and researching ancient mysteries. It's left you with a knack for History and Investigation, and you are well connected with other intellectuals and creative minds in Obojima's villages.
  • Apprentice Diver: A former trainee of the Mariners' Guild, you trained with Divers Armor and learned to identify both hazards and harvests from the sea.
  • Apprentice Witch: Taken under the wing of a local witch or coven, you learned the basics of potions with your Alchemist's Supplies but haven't yet earned a witch's crest. Your ties to a coven linger through shared traditions and a trustworthy peer in the Sibling Student benefit.
  • Courier Brigade Cadet: Trained to cross terrain quickly and quietly, you once delivered packages under the Courier Brigade's noble motto: “Deliverance through delivery.” The Stealth and Survival skills you learned in your trade aid you in your daily adventures.
  • Mechanic: Self-taught or mentored by another tinkerer, you've learned how to repair and modify devices left behind from the First Age. To you, scrap is treasure—your proficiency in the Mechanics and Salvage skills are indispensable when it comes time to harvest it.
  • Spirit Kin: You've had a lifelong bond with the spirits of Obojima—more than most can claim. This connection lets you commune with specific spirits using ritual ingredients.

Flavorful Feats to Hone Your Island Hero

The feats in Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass provide flavorful ways to root your character in the island's whimsical magic, unique culture, and local factions. Below are some of the 20 new feats that offer ways to reward characters or further flesh out their story:

  • Boomerang Expert: Master the returning arc of Obojima's iconic weapon. You throw farther, strike harder, and always catch your boomerang—no Reaction needed.
  • Bumbling Fool: Fumble forward with absurd luck. When you fail an ability check by rolling below half your level, fate sometimes flips the outcome in your favor.
  • Cloud Hopper: Conjure clouds beneath your feet to speed across open air. This sky-skipping feat also grants wind-themed spells for those touched by Obojima's great wind spirit.
  • Coven Witch: As a full member of a witch coven, you gain potion recipes, new spells, and a boost to your Intelligence or Wisdom—perfect for witches who've earned their crest.
  • Freediver: Dive deep with a powerful Swim Speed, Resistance to Cold damage, and the ability to hold your breath longer.
  • Group Combatant: Designed for skirmishers and tanky brawlers, this feat provides damage reduction, helps you shrug off flankers, and allows you to avoid some Opportunity Attacks when leaving a group of enemies.
  • Light Foot: Move like the wind through Difficult Terrain, slip through hostile creatures' spaces, trade attacks for movement, and boost your defenses. Ideal for agile adventurers.
  • Magically Mischievous: Gain proficiency—or Expertise if you already have proficiency—in the Sleight of Hand skill and the magical ability to make stolen items vanish mid-lift. A must-have for charming troublemakers and arcane tricksters.
  • Member of AHA: As a certified adventuring academic, you gain a bonus to Intelligence and some utility spells to help further your pursuit of knowledge.
  • Tellu and Scale's Master Cut: Trained in the adaptable swordplay of the valley sword school, you learn to switch styles with Versatile weapons mid-fight. When wielding a Versatile weapon one-handed, you can strike back when an enemy misses you with an attack, or when wielding a Versatile weapon two-handed, you can potentially knock foes Prone with powerful blows.

Spells That Spark Wonder

The spells in Obojima: Tales from the Tall Grass mix whimsy with utility and were designed to feel like they emerged naturally from life on the island. Whether imagined up by curious inventors, witches of the wilds, or the spirit-touched folk of the island, the 50 spells included in the book help hone the feeling of the setting's lore and culture. Here are some examples of the arcane expressions you'll stumble across during your adventures in Obojima:

  • Bubble Lift: Encase an object that weighs up to 500 pounds in a shimmering bubble, and that makes it float through the air like a magical balloon! The possibilities are endless for trap setups, easy transportation—or getting your kei truck across a river.
  • Create Spirit Train Stop: Punch your magical ticket and summon the Wandering Line. This spell lets you conjure a spectral train stop for inter-island travel and trips to the spirit realm.
  • Jolt: A signature cantrip of tinkerers and inventors, Jolt lets you zap creatures—or temporarily power machines. Perfect for engineers, retro tech enthusiasts, or anyone who's ever hit something to try to make it work.
  • Rageful Nimbus: Summon a vengeful storm cloud to follow you or an ally. If struck by a foe, the cloud lashes out with lightning in retribution.
  • Sprout Foliage: Don't hide in a shrub; become a shrub! Disguise yourself as a leafy shrub (yes, really), hurl berries as magical projectiles, and become one with the underbrush.
  • Summon Jack-o'-Lantern: Trap enemies—or shield allies—in a glowing, grinning pumpkin. This massive construct acts as cover for making ranged attacks or can keep a creature contained within a gourd-esque cage.
