This Unearthed Arcana features new playtest content drawn from the Underdark. It continues the theme of the previous Underdark Options UA, presenting subclasses and species native to the deep places beneath the world.
The material in this UA uses the rules in the Player’s Handbook. Read about this playtest directly from the D&D Game Design Team below.

From the Game Design Team
The material in this Unearthed Arcana includes more material inspired by the Underdark, one of D&D’s most storied locations.
Like our last Unearthed Arcana, the material here touches on elements of the Underdark that have appeared previously, but which have been expanded or transformed in ways we’re not yet ready to fully reveal. Faerzress, for example, has been part of the Underdark since D1 Descent into the Depths of the Earth, and the Deep Imaskari have made their home in the deepest depths of the Lowerdark since 2003’s Underdark. More about these topics will be revealed… in time.
Right now, however, we need your help. Try these new subclasses and species out for yourself, fill out the survey that will follow, and help us make these character options fun at your table.
—Jason Tondro, Senior Game Designer
Underdark Option Highlights
This UA contains subclasses and species that might be included in a future product. Most of these subclasses and species are entirely new and have not appeared in UA before. The Circle of Spores Druid, however, is an update from a previous version that appeared in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything.
Subclasses
This Unearthed Arcana features three new subclasses:
- Freedom Domain
- Circle of Spores
- Faerzress Sorcery
The following sections summarize each subclass and discuss some of their underlying mechanics.
Freedom Domain
The concept behind the Freedom Domain is simple: this subclass is a high-Dexterity Cleric. Some of the mechanical design of the class was borrowed from the high-Dexterity Oath of the Noble Genies Paladin designed for Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn. Previous editions—such as D&D 3e’s Freedom Domain—also had an influence on this subclass.
The spell list was designed with one question in mind: Would this spell help in a jailbreak? When the answer was yes, we tried to include that spell on the list.
We wanted the Freedom Domain’s Channel Divinity to be a low-level Freedom of Movement effect, but it was also important that this Channel Divinity be useful most of the time, even when none of the Cleric’s allies are Grappled or otherwise restricted. Design review and iteration on the design added a movement buff, ensuring that Channel Divinity is always useful.
Circle of Spores
This subclass originally appeared in Guildmaster’s Guide to Ravnica and was updated in Tasha’s Cauldron of Everything for use in the broader D&D multiverse. We have updated it now for 5.5e.
In an Underdark setting, the ability to use spores to reanimate corpses is most commonly associated with myconid sovereigns—and it’s possible your Druid learned this art from one such creature! Some flavor elements have been reworked for the Underdark setting to reflect this connection. These Druids also get Telepathy as part of this subclass, further tying it to myconids.
The “Design Notes” sidebar in the UA explains the major changes we made to this class, so we won’t discuss them here, but can expand on the choice to replace Spreading Spores. Spreading Spores, which allowed you to create a cloud of spores up to 30 feet away from you, felt like it didn’t fit with the “get into melee and raise the dead” loop of the subclass. We hope Explosive Burst encourages Druids to keep themselves and their zombies in the fray!
Faerzress Sorcery
Faerzress, the strange radiation of the Underdark, mutates creatures exposed to it for long periods. This makes it a natural power source for Underdark Sorcerers. Faerzress also has a list of distinctive magical effects: blocking teleportation and scrying, enhancing Darkvision, granting mundane weapons magical properties, and more.
The challenge for this subclass was designing cool Sorcerer abilities with a faerzress vibe, starting with the ability to create faerzress and be not just immune to the radiation’s effects but empowered by it. Adding scrying and terrain-manipulation to the spell list gave the Faerzress Sorcerer interesting options not usually available to the class. Other Sorcerer subclasses are often associated with a particular kind of damage (such as Radiant and Fire for Spellfire Sorcery); for faerzress we leaned into Lightning damage, culminating in the ability to transform into a being of pure faerzress energy.
Species

This UA also contains five new species. While many Underdark adventures focus on characters from “upstairs” traveling downwards, we wanted to provide more ways for players to explore characters who already live in the Underdark and who are fighting to protect their home. You can already play a Drow, Duergar, or Deep Gnome, but now we’re adding the following:
- Deep Imaskari
- Drider
- Illithidkin
- Kuo-toa
- Myconid
Deep Imaskari
We discussed the Deep Imaskari and their relationship to Unlight in the previous UA, so make sure you check that out! The Deep Imaskari are descended from humans, so some features (such as Resourceful) reflect this.
Most features, however, focus on their connection to Unlight. While most Underdark species have Darkvision or some other means of seeing in the dark, the Deep Imaskari instead create light wherever they go.
Drider
There are two parts to the Underdark expression of the Drider fantasy: the spider and the drow, who combine seamlessly into one deadly hunter. This drider’s abilities allow them to lure in and trap their prey. How they finish it off is dependent upon the rest of the character build.
Driders are a staple of the Underdark, but they’re a tough concept to bring to the player-facing side of the game due to their typical size and many legs. We took inspiration from the Centaur in Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse for the mechanical expression of this concept.
Illithidkin
An Illithidkin is a victim (or willing participant) of mind flayer experimentation. They have access to a small selection of psionic abilities. This contrasts with our Ceremorphosis feat path from the previous UA, which requires more build investment and provides the full mind flayer experience. This species and that feat path weren’t designed to be used together, but rather represent two different ways one might run afoul of mind flayer activity.
Kuo-toa
One aspect of the kuo-toa that has captured our imagination is their relationship to their gods. They create idols out of disparate pieces (statues, body parts, household objects, etc), and sometimes those idols come to life. If you play as a kuo-toa, you’ll get access to the Find Familiar spell, but you can mix and match features of the available familiars to create your own delightful abomination!
Myconid
Like their fungal inspiration, myconids come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. They have appeared in many D&D adventures (including Baldur’s Gate 3), and we thought it would be fun to imagine myconid adventurers. What does it look like for a plant to uproot and embark on a journey?
When a myconid leaves their circle for adventure, their party becomes their new circle! Myconid abilities are all about building rapport with your team and sharing knowledge, often without needing to exchange even a word. Because of that, this species is a real “team player.”
Your Feedback Matters
We’re really looking forward to your thoughts and comments on the subclasses and feats in this UA. Once you’ve read or played with these playtest materials, be sure to fill out the survey on D&D Beyond, coming on September 17, and let us know what you think.

Posted Sep 10, 2026I'll mention this in the feedback survey, but the Drider should probably have an addition to its Creature Type that says it counts as an Elf, similar to the Eladrin and Shadar-Kai in Monsters of the Multiverse. Same should probably go for the Deep Imaskari but for counting as Human, depending on how much their lore is changed from previous editions.

Posted Sep 10, 2026So will the next Forgotten Realms gameplay expansion book be Underdark-focused or is this UA for something else?
If it is for Forgotten Realms, neat. Although if that's the case, I hope Themberchaud makes an appearance in (with his own Stat Block).

Posted Sep 10, 2026Very cool, I always enjoy more species (these in particular have some cool features). Freedom domain cleric is really cool too, I like that you're going for a subclass meant for a dex based cleric. The sorcerer subclass has a fun radioactive flavor that I think would be fun to roleplay. Nice to see the circle of spores coming back up, too.
(Also I did notice there is a typo on the level 6 cleric subclass feature)

Posted Sep 10, 2026Id really prefer to stay away from species like Driders in official content. They realistically should have a lot of the same problems as Centaurs. Any time a species would not fall in the “Humanoid” category it needs to be throughly examined.
Even removing logistic and spacial issues from species like this you still have to consider they are a definite “monster” and it would be completely unreasonable to have them in most settings, it just doesnt work well.
Species like myconid and kua-toa are more believable but still straddle that line of “thats definitely a threat” kind of species. I don’t believe we have even had a proper goblin/hobgoblin/bugbear reprint for 5.5e for the Forgotten Realms setting yet and that to me at least is the most believably playable “monstrous” race in most settings.
I would much rather see a bigger focus on the multiple underdark sub-species like duergar. Please also put variants like Imaskari under a parent species like Human rather than a completely different thing, it matters a lot in character creation.

Posted Sep 10, 2026I like these freak pick options for species, I approve of the freak pick options.
Also radiation sorcerer is just a very funny idea for how one gets their magical powers and I hope this makes it through the entire pipeline. :V

Posted Sep 10, 2026I think an Underdark setting book would be perfect for these types of character options, though. They could absolutely exist freely in the Underdark.
I also like more humanoid options, though. More is better but if I had to choose, I much prefer the concepts in this UA over a variant of duergar.

Posted Sep 10, 2026When it’s survey time I’ll put this there too. Some people are saying that this is half baked, and yeah I can see it. The species definitely feel lackluster when compared to others, I think building off of the last underdark UA is good, but I also feel like, as is, some of these species need more “Oomph”. Don’t get me wrong, I feel like all of these species were very much wanted, I myself have wanted as a mushroom man. A piece of input I’ll give is I feel like the Illithid kin should be one of the species that modifies your prior one instead of over righting it, like the reborn from 5e, or if not that direction then it should get “Oomph” like how I said earlier for most of the species in this playtest. Overall love the direction tho.

Posted Sep 10, 2026Yikes WotC. You are 0-for-2 with these. The designs are undercooked, pointless, or just dull. You have a loose idea of something, but almost none of them come together into a cohesive design.
Freedom Cleric is a good utility build, I like finally having the unarmored archetype.
Spore Druid rework needs a little more polish, mostly with the zombie functions
That... THING... the Sorcerer isn't worth the bits it takes up in the file. It has no real function of purpose, the faerzees effect just won't ever come up outside a Menzoberanzen campaign, and even then it is so niche as to be useless. At best you can stop a boss teleporting away. I don't see a path to making this playable or interesting
Deep Imaskari are kind of all over the place with fairly run of the mill abilities, then the absurdly over powered Aura effects, even at once per long rest. I think they can be tweaked, but this is the third Unlight based thing that just doesn't seem finished.
Drider and Kuo-Toa are fine I guess? The features are functional at least. Not sure how folks will feel about the flavor of playable versions.
Illithidkin are... dull? Nothing wrong exactly, but just feels... meh?
Myconid might be the only thing in this article I feel is an unquestionable win. It keeps the monster mechanic in a player-friendly form, and has pretty much all that you'd want from it.
Seriously though, please give these another pass or two internally and bring them back around. Same with the last one. We know you can do better than this.

Posted Sep 10, 2026Like others, I appreciate the flavour, but both underdark UA have seemed half-baked.
Taking this as a positive, though, that community input is being heard earlier, while we can still throw more cool ingredients in and help shape the final product, rather than just fiddle with the toppings - or destroy it.
So I hope everyone composes their thoughts well for the survey.

Posted Sep 10, 2026Im on the fence with some species, would have enjoyed seeing the deep gnome and duergar (maybe they’re done and don’t need playtesting, in case yay!!). The one that I caught my attention was the myconid who I truly enjoyed.
For the classes, I like the concept really like the cleric, I believe it would be great to play one in Deepfall especially with the Foremost Freedom: Freedom from tyranny and oppression inspiring them.
I like the idea behind the. sorcerer but I do not finding cohesive yet… You’re working with abjuration theme and lightning theme? Why not pick one and focus on it also why lightning and not radiant resistance since you’re in the underdark?

Posted Sep 10, 2026I'm sad the Rapport Spores is gone on the Circle of Spores Druid, that's our campaigns most used feature. We're a sneaky group using it with Pass w/o a Trace. Sure they kept telepathy for Halo of Spore, but only 10ft is hardly usable. Also, no blight on the spell list? That is one of their signature spells.

Posted Sep 10, 2026It might not be the *intended* application for Kuo-Toa familiars, but I can’t help but think of a Kuo-Toa necromancer summoning a skeleton or zombie with Magic Resistance, Pack Tactics, Spider-Climb, or sleep poison.
I recently went back to my Zelda setting homebrews, and suddenly feel super validated about Kokiri-related decisions, seeing “innate Find Familiar” as a potential species trait.
