Homebrew Scarecrow Race Details

A scarecrow is usually a humanoid made from straw that scares off birds or other trespassers unintelligent enough to distinguish a scarecrow from a real person. Some that fear a scarecrow, however, have more than enough reason too. Wizards, sorcerers and other such wielders of magic may animate these hay constructs to guard their places of residence, or maybe to simply lend a hand.

Built To Serve

Scarecrows are usually built for tedious tasks, whether it be warding off birds of tending too a patch of pumpkins. However, some are built for more nefarious means, such as capturing innocent wanderers so that they may be sacrificed to the demon their creator serves.

A scarecrow's sentience can come from a soul possessing it, perhaps due to a magical accident. The sentience could have been created specifically to put into the scarecrow.

A Variety Of Designs

A scarecrow is typically made from hay, cotton and other common materials, but they don't have to be. A more exotic design could be made from hundreds of small copper wires, held together by chain-mail. Maybe it could be stuffing held together by cotton, making the scarecrow more similar to a stuffed toy than anything else. One could be made from flower petals held together by stitched together leaves. The possibilities are limited only by the scarecrow's creator's imagination and their magical prowess.

Usually, their limbs are just normal arms made of the same materials as the rest of their body. Scarecrows who's jobs include heavy lifting or combat could have mechanical limbs or pincers, or maybe they could have weapons built into their bodies if they are built for more combat focused purposes.

Their faces can vary greatly, but very rarely pass as being an actual human, typically appearing uncanny and unnerving. Eyes are commonly simple buttons stitched into the scarecrow's face, with the mouth being more buttons or possibly a line of thick string. The eyes could also be gems, simply to show off the scarecrow's creator's wealth. Commonly, a large hard fruit is used for a face, typically a pumpkin or melon with a face carved into it.
