Darvig's Plea is a desperation plea to whatever godlike beings might be watching over you. Created by a itinerant traveler who from time to time got in more trouble than he could handle, the spell creates--possibly--a connection to whatever being the caster calls out to. The caster asks a quick, one sentence question, hoping for an answer that will help them. But as many have discovered all too often, pestering the gods leads to diminished returns.

When this spell is cast, the DM rolls a d10, keeping the result from the players. On a roll of 7 or less, the player receives a brief answer to their brief question. This answer, while possibly difficult to interpret, will be helpful to the character. For example, a character trying to escape a castle full of guards might ask "Which way?" at an intersection, and receive "left" as his answer. If the tunnel then branches again, he would have to cast the spell again. If they are interrogating a prisoner who has given a long answer, asking the question "Is that the truth?" may result in a reply of "mostly" or "some of it" or simply "no".

On a roll of 8 or higher, the caster may receive no response at all--or may receive a random response. The DM should feel free to adjudicate this as they see fit. Asking a lawful good deity and rolling an 8 may result in no reply. Asking the spirit of your ancestors and rolling an 8 may get you a reply that is simply incorrect from spirits who are sick of being bothered. The entity being appealed to must have some connection with the character--a god this character has never prayed to before will not answer.

Every additional casting of this spell without a short or long rest reduces the chance of a helpful reply. With every additional casting, the chance for success is reduced by 1. I.E. a roll of 6 or lower is required for a helpful answer the second time, a roll of 5 or lower the third time, and etc. This means that an 8th or further casting of the spell without a rest has no chance of success. But players should be aware that by the third casting, they are already at even odds of an incorrect answer.

DMs should feel free to heavily restrict the length of questions allowed. Anything more than a sentence that can be uttered quickly is too much for these simple magics to handle. Indeed, DMs may wish to start a countdown out loud once the player announces she is casting this spell. Starting with 5, if the DM reaches 0 and the player has not announced her question, she has cast the spell, lost her action, and gotten no result.
